Rammus Counters: Who Beats Rammus
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Rammus counters are junglers who deal their damage with spells rather than basic attacks, or who scale with the target’s Health instead of fighting his resistances. He’s a 125 range tank who rolls into fights with Powerball, taunts one champion into attacking him, curls up to multiply his Armor and Magic Resist while hurting anyone who hits him, and slams down an area slow. The picks that beat him never need to attack him at all.
Five junglers follow, each tied to named abilities from Riot’s own text, and we didn’t use any win-rate data to choose them.

Why is Rammus hard to counter?
- Spiked Shell (passive): bonus Attack Damage that scales with his Armor and Magic Resist.
- Powerball (Q): he accelerates into a ball toward enemies, damaging and slowing on impact. Cooldown 12 seconds at rank 1, 6 at rank 5.
- Defensive Ball Curl (W): he curls up, his resistances shoot way up, and whoever attacks him eats damage back. Cooldown 7.
- Frenzying Taunt (E): taunts an enemy champion or monster into attacking him. Cooldown 12.
- Soaring Slam (R): he hops and slams a target area for magic damage and a slow, adding a knock-up near the centre if he’s in Powerball. Cooldown 120/105/90.
Attackers have the worst time with him. Defensive Ball Curl returns damage to anyone who hits him, and Frenzying Taunt forces you to hit him, so a marksman or fighter taunted into a curled Rammus is mostly hurting themselves. Spiked Shell then turns all that Armor into damage. The weakness is in the wording, though (read it twice). Ball Curl punishes attacks, and it doesn’t touch spells at all, which is the opening every caster on this list walks through. Also? His tankiness comes from resistances, not Health, so damage based on maximum Health or magic penetration goes straight through.
Which champions are the best Rammus counters?
Lillia
Dream-Laden Bough (passive) adds damage based on maximum Health over time whenever Lillia hits a champion or monster with a skill. Blooming Blows (Q) deals magic damage around her and extra true damage at the edge, and passively stacks Move Speed with every spell that lands. She never needs to attack Rammus, so Ball Curl’s returned damage never triggers. Swirlseed (E) slows, Watch Out! Eep! (W) hits hard in the centre of an area, and Lilting Lullaby (R) puts everyone carrying her Dream Dust to sleep. In practice, she kites him in circles (literally, given the Move Speed stacks) while her passive chips his Health.
Karthus
Karthus doesn’t attack, he casts. Lay Waste (Q) is a delayed blast that hits harder against isolated targets, and a jungler rolling in alone with Powerball is often isolated. Wall of Pain (W) reduces the Move Speed and Magic Resist of any enemy who walks through it, which directly cuts into Ball Curl’s bonus and slows Powerball’s approach. Defile (E) damages everything around him. Requiem (R) channels for 3 seconds, then damages every enemy champion on the map. Death Defied (passive) lets him keep casting after death. Taunt him? He still has his spells queued.
Fiddlesticks
Terrify (Q) strikes a target with fear, making it flee, and it triggers automatically when Fiddlesticks damages enemies with spells while unseen. A Rammus who rolls in and gets feared runs the wrong way for the duration. Bountiful Harvest (W) drains Health from nearby enemies with extra execute damage at the end, and Reap (E) slows everyone in its arc while silencing those in the centre, which can stop Rammus from casting Ball Curl. Crowstorm (R) deals damage every second to everything around Fiddlesticks. To be fair, none of it is a basic attack.
Taliyah
Unraveled Earth (E) creates a slowing minefield, and any enemy knocked through it gets stunned when the mines explode. Seismic Shove (W) throws enemies in a direction of her choosing. Put them together and a Rammus rolling in gets shoved straight through the mines. Threaded Volley (Q) throws rocks in a line, with a slowing boulder on worked ground. Rock Surfing (passive) speeds her near walls, and Weaver’s Wall (R) builds a very long wall she can surf. Honestly, she can make Rammus’s whole engage path a trap.
Brand
Each of Brand’s spells sets the target ablaze through Blaze (passive), up to three stacks, and a champion carrying all three explodes 2 seconds later in a burst that hits everyone nearby. Brand’s damage comes from spells, so the curled shell doesn’t punish him. Sear (Q) stuns ablaze targets, Pillar of Flame (W) deals 25% extra damage to burning units, and Conflagration (E) spreads further from an ablaze target. Pyroclasm (R) bounces up to 5 times. A tank who taunts Brand forces him to attack, but Brand’s real damage was never in his attacks.
How do you play against Rammus in the jungle?
- Don’t attack him while he’s curled. Defensive Ball Curl returns damage to anyone who attacks him.
- Keep spells ready for Powerball. It slows on impact, so stepping aside or casting first both work.
- Save a cleanse or Tenacity for the taunt. Frenzying Taunt forces you into attacking him.
- Spread out in teamfights. Soaring Slam from Powerball knocks up everyone near the centre.
- Stack Health-based damage. His defence is resistances, not Health.
Which items counter Rammus?
He stacks Armor and Magic Resist, so penetration and max-Health damage beat raw stats. Mages should look at Void Staff (40% Magic Penetration) and at Liandry’s Torment, whose burn takes 2% of his max Health each second for 3 seconds after every ability hit. For physical damage junglers, Black Cleaver’s Carve strips 6% Armor per hit. Mercury’s Treads give 30% Tenacity to shorten the taunt, and Quicksilver Sash removes it outright (it isn’t Airborne). Our LoL item database lists the full numbers, and if you’re the tank in this matchup, Kaenic Rookern covers his Soaring Slam magic damage.
When is Rammus at his weakest?
When Ball Curl is on cooldown. It’s only 7 seconds, but for those seconds his resistances drop back to normal and attacking him no longer hurts. That’s when attackers should commit.
The other window is before he’s built Armor. Spiked Shell scales with his resistances, so an early Rammus has neither the defence nor the damage he’ll have later. Invade early. Real talk: a Rammus who falls behind in the first ten minutes rarely catches up, because his damage is tied to items.
New to jungle? Our guide to LoL roles explains how junglers spend a game. Cosmetics sit on the Rammus skins page, the champion guides hub has the rest of the roster, and the Rammus ARAM guide covers one-lane play. Long story short, Rammus counters deal spell damage or max-Health damage, and they never attack a curled armadillo.
FAQ
Who counters Rammus the most?
Lillia, Karthus, Fiddlesticks, Taliyah and Brand: junglers whose damage comes from spells, so Defensive Ball Curl’s returned damage doesn’t punish them.
Does Defensive Ball Curl reflect spell damage?
No. Only basic attacks trigger the returned damage, so spells land on a curled Rammus without any penalty.
Can Quicksilver Sash remove Frenzying Taunt?
Yes. The taunt isn’t Airborne, and Airborne is the one debuff Quicksilver can’t remove.
Why is magic penetration good against Rammus?
Defensive Ball Curl vastly increases his Armor and Magic Resist. Penetration ignores part of those resistances.
How were these Rammus counters chosen?
Rammus’s patch 26.21 kit was read side by side with each jungler’s abilities. We didn’t use win rates.
