Amumu Counters: Who Beats Amumu

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Amumu counters are junglers who block or punish Bandage Toss, out-pressure his early clears, or stay out of reach of his ultimate. He’s a 125-range tank whose attacks Curse enemies to take extra true damage from magic damage, with a stunning bandage pull, a Health-burning aura, physical damage reduction and an area stun for his ultimate.

The picks below were made from his patch 26.21 ability text, matched against each counter’s kit. There’s no win-rate data underneath.

Why is Amumu hard to counter?

  • Cursed Touch (passive): his basic attacks Curse enemies, making incoming magic damage deal bonus true damage to them.
  • Bandage Toss (Q): a bandage that stuns and damages the target while Amumu pulls himself to them. Cooldown 3.
  • Despair (W): nearby enemies lose a percentage of their maximum Health each second and have their Curses refreshed. Cooldown 1.
  • Tantrum (E): permanently reduces the physical damage he takes; activated, it damages enemies around him, and each hit he takes lowers its cooldown. Cooldown 9/8/7/6/5.
  • Curse of the Sad Mummy (R): bandages every nearby enemy, applying his Curse, damaging and stunning them. Cooldown 150/125/100.

Amumu’s whole game is one engage. Bandage Toss stuns a target and pulls him to them, then Curse of the Sad Mummy stuns everyone around him, and Despair melts Health while Cursed Touch makes his team’s magic damage hit harder. Tantrum cuts physical damage, so attackers have a harder time killing him. Where’s the opening? Bandage Toss is a skillshot that needs to land. The ultimate only reaches nearby enemies, so champions who never stand next to him are safe from it. And early on, before he’s built tank items, his clear speed and dueling are modest compared with aggressive junglers.

Which champions are the best Amumu counters?

Nocturne

Nocturne’s W, Shroud of Darkness, raises a magical barrier that eats one enemy ability, and Bandage Toss is the obvious thing to eat. Block it and Amumu doesn’t stun or pull. A successful block also doubles Nocturne’s passive Attack Speed. Paranoia (R) cuts every enemy champion’s sight radius and removes their ally vision, then lets him launch at a nearby enemy, which is a nasty start to an Amumu fight. Unspeakable Horror (E) fears targets who stay in range, Duskbringer (Q) leaves a trail that speeds him up, and Umbra Blades (passive) heals him on its empowered hits. Honestly, Shroud is the best single answer to the bandage.

Taliyah

Unraveled Earth (E) creates a minefield that slows, and if enemies dash through it, the mines explode and stun them. Bandage Toss pulls Amumu through the air to his target. A minefield on top of the target is a punishing place to land. Seismic Shove (W) throws enemies in a direction Taliyah chooses (into the mines works well), Threaded Volley (Q) throws rocks and a stronger boulder on worked ground, and Weaver’s Wall (R) creates a very long wall that can cut off his path to a fight. Rock Surfing (passive) gives her Move Speed near walls. To be fair, she has to place the mines before he commits.

Graves

Graves wants to take Amumu’s camps early, and Amumu wants a few clears before he’s dangerous. Quickdraw (E) dashes and grants Armor and Magic Resist, End of the Line (Q) is an exploding shell that detonates on terrain, and New Destiny (passive) fires four bullets per shot. Smoke Screen (W) shrinks sight range and slows on impact, and Collateral Damage (R) blasts the first champion it hits. Tantrum reduces physical damage, so this is about pressure, not raw damage (Graves won’t out-damage a built Amumu). Thing is, Graves’s 425 range lets him fight outside Despair while he does it.

Kindred

Kindred plays from 500 attack range, and every 4 completed Hunts add more of it. That range keeps Lamb away from Despair’s aura. Lamb’s Respite (R) creates a zone where nothing can die until it ends, a direct answer to a team that follows up Curse of the Sad Mummy with damage. Dance of Arrows (Q) tumbles and fires arrows, Mounting Dread (E) slows and sets up Wolf’s pounce, and Wolf’s Frenzy (W) sends Wolf to attack nearby enemies. Mark of the Kindred (passive) lets her Hunt targets, including Amumu’s camps, for permanent upgrades. Long story short, Kindred makes him pay for slow clears.

Nidalee

Human-form Javelin Toss (Q) deals more damage the farther it flies, and landing it starts a Hunt through Prowl (passive), revealing the target and boosting her cougar abilities against them. That poke wears down a tank who wants to clear. Bushwhack (W) leaves traps around his camps, and Primal Surge (E) heals her and gives allies Attack Speed. Cougar form, from Aspect Of The Cougar (R), adds Pounce, Swipe and a Takedown that hits harder at low Health. Put simply, Nidalee wins the early jungle, and Amumu needs the early jungle to go quietly.

How do you play against Amumu in the jungle?

  • Stand behind minions or monsters. Bandage Toss hits a target, so bodies in the way protect you.
  • Don’t group tightly when his ultimate is up. Curse of the Sad Mummy stuns every nearby enemy at once.
  • Invade early. He needs tank items to take fights, and his clear isn’t fast before them.
  • Use magic damage to burn him. Tantrum reduces only physical damage taken.
  • Step out of Despair. It burns a percentage of maximum Health every second while you stay near him.

Which items counter Amumu?

Magic Resist and crowd control answers. Despair and Cursed Touch’s bonus true damage are tied to magic damage, so Kaenic Rookern (80 Magic Resist plus a magic shield) and Force of Nature help a lot. Mercury’s Treads give 30% Tenacity against both stuns, and Quicksilver Sash removes crowd control other than Airborne, so a carry can break the ultimate’s stun. Banshee’s Veil or Edge of Night can block Bandage Toss with a Spell Shield. For damage dealers, magic damage beats Tantrum’s physical damage reduction. Compare all of it in our items database.

When is Amumu at his weakest?

Early, before tank items. His clears are slow, Despair and Tantrum don’t hit hard yet, and Bandage Toss is his only gap closer. That’s when Graves, Kindred and Nidalee want to take his camps and fight him at them.

He’s also weak after Curse of the Sad Mummy is used. That ultimate sits on a long timer (150 seconds at rank 1), leaving him with one skillshot stun in the meantime. Will he still engage with just the bandage? Sometimes. In practice, the team fight threat drops a lot once the ultimate is gone.

Not sure how junglers spend their time? Read our guide to LoL roles first. If you’re after a different champion entirely, every matchup we’ve written so far is listed in the guides list. The sad mummy’s costumes are gathered on the Amumu skins page, while random one-lane games get a separate Amumu ARAM guide with its own item build. Amumu counters block the bandage, punish his early game and spread out against the ultimate.

FAQ

Who counters Amumu the most?

Junglers who block Bandage Toss or pressure him early: Nocturne, Taliyah, Graves, Kindred and Nidalee.

Can Nocturne block Bandage Toss?

Yes. Shroud of Darkness creates a barrier that blocks a single enemy ability, and Bandage Toss is an ability.

Does Magic Resist work against Amumu?

Yes. Cursed Touch makes incoming magic damage deal bonus true damage, so reducing magic damage also limits the Curse’s effect. Tantrum, meanwhile, reduces only the physical damage Amumu takes.

How do you avoid Amumu’s ultimate?

Curse of the Sad Mummy stuns enemies around Amumu, so spreading out and staying away from him when it’s available keeps most of your team safe.

How were these counters chosen?

Bandage Toss, the ultimate and his slow early clears decided it, all read from the patch 26.21 ability text. No match statistics were used.
