Winged Moonplate is the Health and Move Speed component in League of Legends: 200 Health and 4% Move Speed for 800 gold in patch 26.21, with no passive. It is a Ruby Crystal plus a 400 gold combine fee, and it builds into three tank items that all care about moving: Dead Man’s Plate, Force of Nature and Hullbreaker.

What does Winged Moonplate do?

200 Health and 4% Move Speed. The Health is a Ruby Crystal’s worth; the Move Speed is the part you cannot get from any other component at this price.

Percent Move Speed is rarer in the shop than it looks, and on a tank it does something specific: it closes the gap between a front-liner who wants to fight and a carry who wants to leave. Four percent is small on paper, roughly 14 units on a champion with 350 base speed, but it is on from the moment you buy it and it stacks with boots, so a top laner with Moonplate and Tier 2 boots at ten minutes is quietly the fastest champion in the lane (which matters far more for a Shen walking to a fight than for anyone standing still). Is it worth buying for the speed alone? No, but then nobody does; the item is bought for what it becomes.

Is Winged Moonplate gold efficient?

A little above even: 104%. The Health is worth 533 gold at 2.67 gold per point, and the Move Speed 300 gold at 75 gold per percent, so the item carries 833 gold of stats on a 800 gold price.

The 400 gold combine step is the same price as the Ruby Crystal inside it, which is steep for a component with no passive; the efficiency only comes out positive because percent Move Speed is expensive in the reference table. Thing is, that is a fair reflection of how the stat plays, and nobody who has chased down a fleeing carry feels cheated by it. Fair price. The sell price is 560 gold (70% back, the usual rate for an epic item).

What does it build into?

Three tank items, each built around moving or standing in a different way:

  • Dead Man’s Plate, the Armor item that charges up as you move and discharges on your next attack.
  • Force of Nature, the Magic Resist item that rewards you for walking through magic damage.
  • Hullbreaker, the split-pushing item that buffs your minions and your tower damage.

So the Moonplate is a tank component, but the choice inside it is a real one: Armor against a physical team, Magic Resist against a magic team, or Hullbreaker when the plan is to never be in the teamfight at all. Honestly, that is why many tanks buy the Moonplate on the second recall before they know which they need, since it sits comfortably in the inventory while the enemy team shows its hand. The LoL items database has the prices of all three.

Who buys it?

Tanks and juggernauts who build Dead Man’s Plate or Force of Nature: Malphite, Ornn, Sion, Shen, Garen, Dr. Mundo, Zac, Sejuani and most of the top lane and jungle front line. Split pushers take it on the way to Hullbreaker (Tryndamere, Fiora in some games, Yorick, Sion again). Who skips it? Mages and marksmen, obviously, and tanks who build Thornmail or Frozen Heart first instead, since those start from Chain Vest and Glacial Buckler and never touch the Moonplate.

How has Winged Moonplate changed over the patches?

Once. It appeared in patch 10.23 with the 2021 item overhaul, as the shared component for the Move Speed tank items, and sat untouched for almost four years before patch 14.19 changed both of its numbers: Health 150 → 200, Move Speed 5% → 4%. Funny enough, that trade is close to even in gold terms, 50 Health in exchange for one percent of speed, so it was less a buff than a nudge toward the Health half of the item. Nothing since, at least in Riot’s data.

When should you buy it?

On the second recall, usually, after boots and a first component, when you have 800 gold and the enemy team has shown whether the danger is physical or magical. If the lane is hard, the Ruby Crystal alone on the first back and the combine on the next one. For what it’s worth, the Moonplate is a poor item to rush before boots, because its Move Speed is a percentage of a number that boots increase, and the order of the two purchases changes how much the item gives. If you are still working out whether your champion is one of the tanks that builds this way, the guide to LoL roles covers what the top lane and jungle front line is expected to do, and Winged Moonplate is the component that group buys on its way to the big Armor and Magic Resist items.

FAQ

Does it have a passive?

No. It is a two-stat component.

What does it build into?

Dead Man’s Plate, Force of Nature and Hullbreaker.
