Gold efficiency
| Stat | Amount | Gold per point | Gold value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack Damage | 10 | 35 g | 350 g |
| Total stat value | 350 g |
Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 350 ÷ 350 = 100%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted.

Long Sword is the basic Attack Damage component in League of Legends: 10 Attack Damage for 350 gold in patch 26.21, with no passive and nothing beneath it. Twenty items build out of it, from Serrated Dirk, Caulfield’s Warhammer and Vampiric Scepter up to finished items like Eclipse, Youmuu’s Ghostblade and Manamune, so almost every AD champion buys at least one in a normal game.
What does Long Sword do?
It adds 10 Attack Damage, and that is all. Every basic attack and every ability that scales with AD hits a little harder.
Ten points sounds small, and late in the game it is. Early it is not. A level two marksman has somewhere around 60 Attack Damage, so the Sword is a sixth more on every auto attack during the stretch of lane where last hits and short trades decide who gets to farm (that is also why so many marksmen start with Doran’s Blade, which packs the same AD plus Health). Does a mage get anything out of it? No, and neither does a tank, which keeps the item firmly in the hands of marksmen, fighters and assassins.
Is it worth the gold?
Exactly even, because it defines the price. It is the reference item our efficiency numbers use for Attack Damage, 35 gold per point, so its 10 AD is worth 350 gold and the item is 100% efficient at 350 gold.
It sells for 245 gold. In practice the comparison that matters is not with other components but with potions and wards on the same recall: two Long Swords or a Pickaxe and a Control Ward? Thing is, the answer depends on who is winning, and a player behind in lane often gets more out of the ward than out of the extra damage, even though the damage feels better to buy.
What does Long Sword build into?
Twenty items, which is the widest build tree of any damage component:
- Lethality: Serrated Dirk, Youmuu’s Ghostblade, Voltaic Cyclosword and Eclipse.
- Fighter components: Caulfield’s Warhammer, Phage, Tiamat, Hearthbound Axe, Hexdrinker, Steel Sigil, Tunneler and Executioner’s Calling.
- Marksman items: Noonquiver, Last Whisper, Vampiric Scepter, Rectrix, Yun Tal Wildarrows and Hexoptics C44.
- Mana scaling: Manamune, and the newer Endless Hunger.
So the Sword is never a wasted buy for an AD champion, whatever the game turns into. For what it’s worth, that is the strongest argument for picking one up on an awkward recall rather than walking back with 350 gold unspent. Every item on that list, with its current price, is in the LoL items database.
Who buys it?
Marksmen, assassins, fighters, AD junglers, AD supports like Pyke or Senna. Basically anyone whose damage is physical. Honestly, the only AD players who skip it for long stretches are the ones whose first item needs a B. F. Sword, and even they usually pick up one or two for a Dirk or a Warhammer later.
How has it changed over the patches?
Only in price, and only downward. Riot’s data lists it at 400 gold from 2013 or earlier, cut to 360 gold in patch 3.14 and to 350 gold in patch 5.22. The 10 Attack Damage has never moved. Funny enough, the whole AD economy is built around that number, so changing it would mean repricing a third of the shop.
When should you buy it?
On any recall where you are an AD champion, have 350 to 700 gold left after wards and potions, and the next full component is out of reach. Two Swords plus a potion is a classic early back. Short on gold and losing? A ward and a potion first, then the Sword. If you are still deciding whether a physical damage role suits you, the guide to LoL roles covers how marksmen, fighters and assassins differ, and Long Sword is where all three of their builds begin.
FAQ
How much does Long Sword cost?
350 gold in patch 26.21, and the shop pays 245 gold for it when you sell.
What stat does it give?
10 Attack Damage.
Does it have a passive?
No, it is a flat Attack Damage component.
How many items build from it?
Twenty, including Serrated Dirk, Caulfield’s Warhammer, Phage, Tiamat, Vampiric Scepter, Youmuu’s Ghostblade, Eclipse and Manamune.
Is Doran’s Blade the better buy?
As a starting item, yes, since it adds Health and sustain for a little more gold. The Sword wins on recalls, because it builds into things and the Blade does not.
