Eclipse is a 2,900 gold fighter item in League of Legends for champions who land two hits in a row: 60 Attack Damage and 15 Ability Haste in patch 26.21. Its Ever Rising Moon passive gives you a Shield for 2 seconds whenever you hit a champion with 2 separate attacks or abilities inside 2 seconds.

What does Ever Rising Moon do?

Hit a champion twice, get a shield. The two hits can be any mix of basic attacks and abilities, as long as they are separate instances and land within 2 seconds of each other.

The result is a shield that is almost always up for champions who trade in short bursts. A Pantheon Q into an auto, a Renekton W into a Q, a Jayce hammer combo: each of those pairs lights up the passive, and because the shield lasts 2 seconds it soaks the enemy’s answer to your trade rather than the trade itself. How often can it fire? The shop tooltip lists the cooldown, and it is short enough that an extended fight gives you several shields, not one.

The scaling matters too. The shield grows with your level, so the same item protects you more at 16 than at 9 (details in the tooltip, since Riot adjusts the curve now and then).

Is Eclipse gold efficient?

Close to it on stats alone: 98%, which is 2,850 gold of stats for 2,900 gold. The 60 Attack Damage is worth 2,100 gold at 35 gold per point, and the 15 Ability Haste adds 750 gold.

That leaves the shield costing you about 50 gold of stats, which is nothing. To be fair, the number hides how much the item depends on your kit: a champion that lands the two hits every few seconds gets a defensive item and a damage item in one slot, and one that pokes once and backs off gets 60 Attack Damage and a passive it rarely sees. Black Cleaver is the common alternative for the second kind of player, with Health instead of a shield.

Who should build Eclipse?

Attack Damage fighters and some assassins whose combos naturally produce two quick hits. Pantheon, Renekton, Camille, Jayce, Jarvan IV and Wukong are regular buyers, and it still shows up on a few lethality mids who want a bit of safety.

Who should skip it? Marksmen, mostly. They attack often enough to trigger it constantly, but the item has no Attack Speed and no crit chance, so it fights with their other purchases. Tanks don’t want the Attack Damage either. In practice the item lives in the first or second slot of a bruiser build, often right after boots, when the shield matters most in lane trades.

What does the build path look like?

Caulfield’s Warhammer (1,050 gold), Pickaxe (875 gold) and a Long Sword (350 gold), with 625 gold to combine. Caulfield’s Warhammer is the better first component because it brings the Ability Haste along with Attack Damage, and Haste is what makes your two-hit combos come around faster. Nothing builds from the finished item.

How has Eclipse changed over the patches?

It has lost two stats and gained one. Riot’s files list it from patch 10.23 as a Mythic with Lethality and Omnivamp, and the shape today is the product of these changes:

  • Patch 13.3: Omnivamp removed, Ability Haste added.
  • Patch 14.1: cost 3,100 → 2,800, Attack Damage 60 → 70.
  • Patch 14.19: cost 2,800 → 2,900, Attack Damage 70 → 60.
  • Patch 14.21: effect text changed.

Thing is, the Lethality is gone as well. That turned an assassin item into a fighter item without anyone renaming it. The table above lists every change, and the LoL items database shows the same history for every other item in the game.

When is it the right buy?

When your champion trades in two-hit bursts and you want to win those trades without buying a tank item. If you are new to the fighter role and unsure which champions fit that description, the guide to LoL roles explains what top laners and bruisers are built to do. Long story short, Eclipse rewards aggression that comes in pairs.
