Space Groove Blitz & Crank

First game I played with Space Groove Blitz & Crank I landed a hook on their Ezreal from fog and my ADC typed “that grab looked funky as hell.” Accurate. This Legendary turns Blitzcrank into a walking disco machine with a tiny cat copilot and honestly the whole concept shouldnt work but it does. Riot dropped this April 1, 2021 and I remember thinking it was an April Fools joke. It was not.

How Space Groove changes Blitzcrank

The big thing here is the dual identity. Blitzcrank is now this massive retro-futuristic robot and Crank is the little cat sitting inside the cockpit area. The dynamic between them plays out in animations, voice lines, and the recall. Full package.

Q hook animation got reworked completely. The fist launches out with these trailing disco particles, purples and pinks swirling behind it. Looks clean in lane and reads well for the enemy too, which I appreciate because nothing feels worse than dying to a grab you couldnt see coming. W overdrive has Blitzcrank skating forward with roller-disco energy, sparkle trails behind each step. Been running this in Diamond support games and the movement speed boost feels smoother with the new animation, might be placebo but I swear it does.

E uppercut pops with a burst of groovy VFX. Star particles. The R static field drops this massive disco floor zone around Blitzcrank when you proc it in a teamfight. Looks incredible in a 5v5 engage. Three things stood out: ult VFX, recall, voice.

Not gonna lie, the recall animation is one of the best in the game. Blitzcrank and the cat do a whole dance routine. I have sat in fountain just watching it loop. (Random aside: I showed my girlfriend the recall and she said “why dont all your characters look like this” and I had no answer.) The voice acting by Joe Zieja carries hard. New VO means completely fresh dialogue between the robot and the cat. They bicker. They vibe. The interactions during jungle clear or just walking to lane give Blitzcrank more personality than the base skin has ever had.

Could be wrong here but I think this is the skin where Riot figured out how to make support Legendaries feel premium. Pre-6 laning with this skin just hits different because every ability has visual weight behind it.

The Space Groove line and release details

Space Groove as a skinline is Riot’s disco-funk-space theme. Launched alongside Space Groove Nasus, Lulu, Rumble, and others in that first wave. David Villegas and West Studio handled the splash, they captured the vibe perfectly. The whole piece has this retro 70s space palette going on.

Kinda feels like the Space Groove line peaked with Blitz & Crank specifically because the champion’s silhouette works so well as a giant dance robot. Nasus is cool too but Blitzcrank was built for this concept. Season 11 release, back when Riot was experimenting with wilder thematic choices.

6 chromas total. Amethyst leans into the purple cosmic angle harder than base, thats my personal pick for ranked. Disco chroma lives up to its name with the teal and purple split – fits the skinline identity better than any other option. Pearl exists if you want that clean white aesthetic but I think it loses some of the funkiness that makes the skin work. The rest are fine but those three are the ones worth considering.

This Legendary sits at 1820 RP. Permanent shop. Been there since launch, not going anywhere.

Ability breakdown for the hook mains

Real talk though, if you play Blitzcrank you play him for Q. The Rocket Grab on Space Groove has this satisfying weight to it. The fist model is redesigned, bigger and more stylized, and the particle trail makes it easy to track in chaotic teamfights. Played maybe 200 games with this skin and I can say the Q feels identical hitbox-wise to base. Some skins have visual inconsistencies but this one reads true.

W Overdrive animation is where the personality shines. Blitzcrank goes full skating mode and the cat reacts. E Power Fist has that pop of stars on impact. Good visual feedback when you’re peeling for your backline or punishing a dive. Last Tuesday around 2 AM I was in a game where their Katarina jumped into our comp and I E’d her mid-shunpo – the star burst on contact was chef’s kiss.

R passive lightning bolts got the disco treatment too. They arc out with pink-purple electricity instead of the base blue. In a splitpush scenario or clearing a wave the ambient VFX keep the skin feeling alive even during downtime. Maybe just my experience but the R active feels more impactful visually than any other Blitzcrank skin.

Should you buy Space Groove Blitz & Crank?

Straight talk: best Blitzcrank skin full stop. iBlitzcrank was the go-to for years and Lancer Paragon had its moment, but Space Groove Blitz & Crank outclasses both. New model, new VFX, complete VO with the cat dynamic, and a recall that actually makes you want to back. Full Legendary price, earns it.

Worth 1820 RP if you main Blitzcrank. Even if you only play him as a pocket pick in ranked, this is the one to own. The voice lines alone justify the price over Epic alternatives. Been maining Blitzcrank with this skin since season 11 and I keep coming back to it over every other option. Skip it only if you genuinely dont play support or Blitzcrank at all. For everyone else who locks in the robot in solo queue – this is it.
