Not gonna lie, Rusty Blitzcrank holds a weird place in my heart. This is one of those skins that barely changes anything visually but carries weight purely because of how old and rare it is. Locked in this skin maybe twice in my Diamond games over the past few seasons and both times someone in all chat asked where I got it. That reaction alone is worth something.

What Rusty Blitzcrank actually looks like

So heres the thing. This is a Standard tier skin from 2009. No new VFX. No new recall animation. Voice lines stay base. What you get is a texture swap on Blitzcrank’s model that makes him look like he’s been sitting in a junkyard for a few decades. The golden plating turns into this brownish-red oxidized metal, and the overall color palette shifts to rusted iron tones. That’s it.

The Q hook looks the same. W overdrive, same particles. E and R unchanged. Playing this in lane feels identical to base Blitzcrank from a gameplay perspective. Could be wrong here but I think the texture work actually reads better on the older model than some of the flashy 1350 RP skins do. Simple change – huge impact on the silhouette. The rust texture has this grimy quality that makes Blitzcrank look like he crawled out of Zaun’s underbelly, which honestly fits the champion fantasy harder than the clean default model.

Been running this in ranked a handful of times and nobody expects the hook from a Rusty Blitzcrank. Might be overthinking it but theres a psychological edge to using a skin this rare. Your lane opponent sees it and knows you’ve been around. One game last March around midnight my ADC pinged the skin in champ select and typed “og” before we even loaded in.

The history behind Rusty Blitzcrank

Released November 20, 2009. Let that sink in. Pre-season 1. League was a completely different game back then, maybe season 0 technically. 520 RP at the time, which was cheap even by 2009 standards.

No splash artist credited in the data, which tracks for skins from that era. Riot wasnt exactly documenting their art pipeline back when the company had like 50 employees. The splash itself is bare bones compared to modern standards but it has character.

Rusty Blitzcrank sits in the Legacy vault. Hextech only these days. You cant just walk into the shop and buy it. This is one of those skins that Riot pulled from the store years ago and never really brought back in any meaningful rotation. (Random aside: I’m pretty sure this skin caused some internal drama at Riot because it looked too similar to the base model and they didn’t want new players feeling ripped off.) The Legacy skinline tag is basically Riot’s way of saying “we made this, we acknowledge it exists, but good luck getting it.”

Should you care about Rusty Blitzcrank?

Real verdict: this skin is a collector’s piece. Pure flex. If you main Blitzcrank and you somehow roll this from a chest, keep it. The 520 RP price point is irrelevant because you cant buy it anyway. Loot exclusive at this point.

For actual Blitzcrank gameplay upgrades you’re better off with something like Space Groove or Lancer Paragon. Those give you new VFX on your hook, fresh recall animations, the whole package. Rusty Blitzcrank gives you a color change and street cred. Two very different value propositions.

Blitzcrank mains who play ranked seriously, who care about peel and engage and landing that backline hook in teamfights – they probably want cleaner VFX and smoother animations. But if you’re the type of player who values rarity over polish, who wants to lock in something that maybe 3 people in your entire server own, Rusty Blitzcrank is that skin. Seen maybe two of these across all my games since season 9 I think. S-tier flex for Blitzcrank collectors, bottom tier for anyone who actually wants visual upgrades on the Rift. Fair price for what it was. Overpriced if it somehow showed up in the shop today at 520 RP with no changes. Skip it unless you already have it or you get lucky in Hextech crafting.
