Space Groove Gwen

First time I saw Space Groove Gwen load in, I thought Riot finally figured out what to do with her aesthetic. Gwen’s base model already leans into this whimsical doll fantasy, and dropping her into a disco-funk skinline felt like a natural fit. Been running this in Diamond since around mid-season 11 and honestly its one of those skins that just clicks the moment you lock in.

What the skin actually changes

So the VFX got a full rework here. Her Q, Snip Snip, throws out these funky retro-colored slashes that trail pink and teal particles across the screen. Might be overthinking it but the scissors feel snappier with the new effects. Could just be placebo from the visuals, but I swear my cs improved the first week I used it.

W is where it gets interesting. Hallowed Mist shifts into this groovy bubble with swirling disco lights inside. Hard to miss in a teamfight, which is both a blessing and a curse. Your team knows where the safe zone is. The enemy jungler also knows exactly where to throw their abilities. Trade-offs.

E dash leaves a sparkly trail behind Gwen. Clean animation. R needles come out with this satisfying purple-pink burst that reads well against the Rift background, especially during late-game fights around baron pit. Played maybe 40 games last Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and the ult particles never got old. The recall animation is the highlight though. Gwen does this little disco dance with her scissors and it genuinely made my duo laugh every time. No new voice lines, kept the base VO.

Space Groove and the disco fantasy

Space Groove Gwen dropped April 15, 2021. Early season 11. Bo ‘chenbowow’ Chen handled the artwork and they captured this retro-futuristic vibe perfectly. The splash has Gwen mid-dance with Willump and a bunch of the other Space Groove crew in the background.

The Space Groove line is one of Riot’s better thematic experiments. Not every champion fits it, but Gwen belongs here. The color palette shifts from her usual blue-white to these warm pinks, teals, and purples. Feels like a 70s dance floor got transported to the Rift.

9 chromas total if you want variety. Disco is my personal favorite, the teal-and-purple combo hits the mage fantasy harder than base. Obsidian goes full dark mode which looks sick but kinda fights against the whole groove aesthetic. Rose Quartz is the safe pick if you want something softer. Not gonna lie, I rotate between Disco and the base skin depending on my mood. (Random aside: the Disco chroma splash would make a solid phone wallpaper, been meaning to set that up for months.)

Is Space Groove Gwen worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is a solid Epic skin. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX on every ability, a fun recall, clean model changes. You’re not getting new voice lines at this price point and thats expected. Standard pricing for an above-average skin.

For Gwen mains specifically, this competes with Cafe Cuties for the top spot. I think Space Groove edges it out purely because the VFX read cleaner in lane. Been maining Gwen with this skin on and off since season 11 and I keep coming back to it over the alternatives. That ranked game where my Kayn inted three times before level 6, I still managed to carry a teamfight partly because the W bubble made my positioning super obvious to my support.

Skip it if you dont play Gwen at all. But if she’s in your rotation, even as a pocket pick for top lane, this is the one to grab. Shop has it permanently, no vault nonsense. Top pick for Gwen mains who want something with personality without going overboard. The Space Groove line delivered here, and at 1350 RP you’re getting exactly what you’d expect from a well-executed Epic tier skin. Worth it.
