Nightbringer Jarvan IV

First game I locked in Nightbringer Jarvan IV was around 1 AM on a Tuesday, the patch had just dropped and I wanted to see what Riot cooked up for J4 this time. Honestly not gonna lie, the loading screen splash alone had me hyped. The whole corrupted celestial warrior look fits Jarvan IV way better than I expected. Dark energy pouring off the armor, glowing cracks across the model. Felt like piloting something genuinely menacing for once instead of the standard prince-in-shiny-armor vibe.

What Nightbringer actually changes on Jarvan IV

So this is an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP, which means new VFX and a new recall animation but no new voice lines. Voice stays default. Thats fine honestly, Kyle Hebert’s base VO still holds up and the visual overhaul does enough heavy lifting on its own.

The Q, Dragon Strike, leaves this trail of dark energy that reads way cleaner than base in teamfights. You can actually track the hitbox better which sounds like a minor thing but when you’re trying to land the E-Q combo on a backline carry through a messy fight, clarity matters. The E, Demacian Standard, drops this corrupted dark banner that pulses with nightbringer energy. Looks sick planted in dragon pit.

The W shield has a subtle dark ripple effect. Nothing crazy but noticeable. Where it really pops is the R. Cataclysm drops you into this arena of dark celestial energy and the impact VFX on landing hit hard visually. Been running this in Diamond for a while now and I’ve gotten comments from duo partners about how the ult looks. The recall animation ties it together, Jarvan IV channels this dark power, very on-brand for the Nightbringer theme.

Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack particles also got a slight tweak. There’s a darker trail on the basic attacks that base Jarvan IV doesnt have. Subtle enough that you might miss it in lane but it adds up over a full game of cs-ing and trading.

The Nightbringer line and release context

Nightbringer Jarvan IV released April 20, 2023. Mid season 13. Bo “chenbowow” Chen handled the artwork and they captured the vibe perfectly. The splash has J4 mid-leap with dark energy swirling around the lance, very dynamic composition.

The Nightbringer and Dawnbringer skinline is one of Riot’s better thematic sets. Jarvan IV fits the corrupted cosmic warrior angle naturally since his kit is all about aggressive engage and diving. Think about it: you’re literally slamming people into a cage with your ult. The dark celestial power fantasy just works here in a way it wouldnt for, say, a poke mage.

8 chromas total for this one. Obsidian is my go-to, turns the whole model into this deep black with minimal glow that looks clean against the Rift. Amethyst hits a purple mage-knight vibe that I keep coming back to as well. Sapphire is worth mentioning too, the blue tones remind me of the Dawnbringer side but darker, like a corrupted version. (Random aside: the Obsidian chroma is genuinely my ranked lock-in every time I play J4 now, replaced Dark Star for me entirely.)

Is Nightbringer Jarvan IV worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: for Jarvan IV mains this is a strong pickup. Might be overthinking it but I think the VFX clarity on Q and E-Q combo actually gives you a slight readability advantage in chaotic teamfights. Not a competitive edge obviously but it feels better to play, and feeling good on your main matters when you’re grinding ranked at 2 AM.

The competition in J4’s skin catalog is decent. Dark Star is solid, Hextech has the prestige factor, and Mythmaker came out close to this one. But Nightbringer Jarvan IV occupies a different space. Darker, more aggressive, less flashy-cute. If you like the edgy aesthetic this is arguably the best Jarvan IV skin for that mood. Season 13 I think I played maybe 40 games with it before even rotating to anything else.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX across the kit, clean recall, strong splash, 8 chromas if you want variety. No new VO but at this price point thats standard. Skip this if you already have Dark Star and are happy with it, but if you main Jarvan IV and want something that reads as threatening in the loading screen and in lane, Nightbringer delivers. Been my go-to J4 skin since it dropped and I dont see that changing soon. Top pick for Jarvan IV mains who want that aggressive energy without going full meme like Pool Party.
