Dark Star Jarvan IV

First time I saw Dark Star Jarvan IV load into my game I thought it was a Mordekaiser skin. Serious. The silhouette is so different from base Jarvan IV that it took me a second to register the flag and the lance. Thats not a complaint, by the way. The whole cosmic horror vibe transforms him into something that feels like it belongs in a completely different game, and I mean that in the best way possible.

What the Dark Star theme does to J4

The model is where this skin earns its 1350 RP. Jarvan IV goes from Demacian prince to a living black hole, covered in deep purple and black armor with these swirling galaxy textures baked into his body. The lance looks like it could tear a hole in spacetime. Not sure if it’s just me but the proportions feel slightly bigger than base, gives him more presence in lane.

VFX got a full overhaul. His Q – Dragon Strike – leaves this trail of dark cosmic energy, purple and black particles that linger for a second. E – Demacian Standard drops what looks like a corrupted star instead of a flag. The E-Q combo specifically hits different visually because you get this gravitational pull effect connecting the two abilities. Been running this in Diamond for a while now and the combo still looks clean every time.

The R though. Cataclysm. The arena walls become these pillars of compressed dark matter with galaxy swirls inside them. Trapped their Jinx in it last week near baron pit and my support literally typed “that looked sick” in chat. The recall animation has Jarvan IV opening a void rift and getting pulled into it. Standard voice lines, no new VO, but the visual package carries hard enough that you dont really notice.

The Dark Star line and where J4 fits

Released March 1, 2018. Season 8 if I remember right, around that time Riot was pumping out Dark Star skins like crazy. Jojo So handled the artwork and honestly they captured the cosmic dread perfectly. The splash has Jarvan IV floating in deep space with galaxies collapsing around him. It’s my second monitor wallpaper right now (random aside: had to crop it weird because ultrawide monitors hate splash art aspect ratios).

Dark Star as a skinline is one of Riot’s best. Thresh, Kha’Zix, Varus, Orianna – the lineup is stacked. Jarvan IV fits naturally because his kit is all about creating zones and trapping people, which maps perfectly onto the gravity well / black hole fantasy. Kinda feels like the skin was designed around Cataclysm first and everything else followed.

One chroma available: Antimatter. Goes full black and crimson red instead of the purple cosmic palette. I actually prefer it over the base color scheme for ranked because the darker tones read cleaner against Summoner’s Rift. Worth grabbing if you see it on sale.

Is Dark Star Jarvan IV worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is a top three Jarvan IV skin. Maybe top two. The VFX work alone justifies the Epic price tag, and the model transformation is dramatic enough that it feels like a premium purchase. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get.

Could be wrong here but I think this aged better than most 2018 skins. The dark cosmic aesthetic doesn’t rely on trendy effects that look dated after a couple seasons. Played maybe 150 games with this across season 8 through now and it still holds up. The Cataclysm walls especially – Riot nailed the visual weight on those.

If you main Jarvan IV and you jungle or top with him regularly, this is the skin. Shop has it, permanent availability, no vault nonsense. Skip it only if you already own Nightbringer, which is the main competition at this point. For everyone else who plays J4 even occasionally in their ranked rotation, Dark Star Jarvan IV is the one to lock in. S-tier Jarvan IV cosmetic, been saying it since 2018 and I stand by it six seasons later.
