Locked in Mythmaker Jarvan IV on patch day back in January 2025 and honestly wasnt sure what to expect. J4 skins have been hit or miss for years. But something about the splash caught me off guard. The gold and crimson palette, the ceremonial armor, the way he’s holding the lance like he’s about to flag-drag into an entire teamfight and come out looking regal doing it. First impressions were strong.
What Mythmaker Jarvan IV actually brings to the Rift
This is an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP, so you get the full treatment: new VFX across all abilities, a new recall animation, and updated particles. Voice lines stay base, which is fine because Kyle Hebert’s VO still holds up after all these years. No VO refresh needed when the original is that solid.
The Q feels noticeably different. Dragon Strike has this golden trailing energy that reads cleaner than base, especially when you combo it with E for the knockup. Speaking of the E-Q combo, the flag itself got a visual overhaul. Plants down with a burst of red and gold that actually stands out in chaotic teamfights. Been running this in Diamond ranked since it dropped and I can confirm the clarity is better than half his older skins.
W shield pops with this ornate circular pattern. Kinda feels like a paper lantern expanding around you. The R is where the skin shines hardest though. Cataclysm’s arena walls have these intricate mythical engravings, and the slam itself kicks up golden sparks. Not gonna lie, trapping their fed ADC inside that cage last Tuesday around 2 AM in a promo game felt extra satisfying with this skin on.
Recall animation has J4 performing some kind of ceremonial martial display. Clean. Nothing over the top, fits the Mythmaker theme without being goofy about it.
The Mythmaker line and who made this skin
Mythmaker is one of Riot’s Lunar New Year adjacent skinlines that pulls from East Asian mythology. Released January 23, 2025. The line already had some bangers before J4 joined. Mythmaker Irelia and Mythmaker Zyra set a high bar for the thematic.
Marie Magny and West Studio handled the artwork. They captured the ceremonial warrior fantasy perfectly. The splash has this warm lantern glow behind Jarvan IV that makes the whole piece feel like a festival poster. (Random aside: this splash is my phone lock screen right now and I keep getting compliments on it from people who dont even play League.)
8 chromas total if you want variety. Obsidian is my go-to because the dark colorway against the gold trim reads like a corrupted emperor vibe. Sapphire hits different too, the deep blue swaps the warm tones for something colder and more regal. Tanzanite leans purple and feels more mage-like than warrior, which is weird for J4 but I respect the choice. Could be wrong here but I think the base red and gold still looks best for the theme Riot was going for.
This is a Legacy vault skin, so you cant just grab it whenever you want. Hextech only these days unless Riot brings it back for an event rotation. Seen maybe 4 of these in my games all season, which honestly makes it feel more exclusive when you do lock it in.
Should you pick up Mythmaker Jarvan IV?
Real verdict: this is a top three Jarvan IV skin. Might be overthinking it but I think it edges out Dark Star for the number two spot behind Hextech. The VFX are clean without being distracting, the thematic is strong, and the color palette just works on the Rift’s green backdrop.
1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Standard Epic pricing and J4 mains should be happy. The E-Q combo looks and feels premium. If you jungle with Jarvan IV or play him top for splitpush, the skin performs well in both contexts. Ganking with the golden flag combo is chef’s kiss.
Where it falls short: base voice lines. Every J4 skin has this problem unless you’re running Nightbringer. At this price point though, expecting new VO is unrealistic. The skin delivers where it counts. Been maining Jarvan IV with this skin for maybe 60 games now and I keep coming back to it over the rest of his catalog. If it rotates back into the shop or you roll it from a chest, dont sleep on it. S-tier Jarvan IV cosmetic for sure.
