First time I saw Hextech Anivia in a loading screen I thought someone was running a custom skin. Back in early 2011, Anivia had maybe three skins total and this one looked like it came from a different game entirely. Mechanical wings, copper plating, glowing energy core. Not gonna lie, it caught me off guard for a 750 RP skin.
The Hextech treatment on Anivia
So what actually changes here. Anivia gets a full model swap into this steampunk-mechanical bird design. The organic ice theme is completely gone, replaced with bronze and teal metallic plating across the entire body. Wings look like they belong on some Piltover workshop prototype. Gears and cogs visible in the joints. Cool concept.
Thats about where the changes stop though. Being a Standard tier skin at 750 RP, you’re not getting new particles on Q, W, E, or R. Your Crystallize wall still looks like ice. Your ult still drops the same blizzard circle. Flash Frost is the same blue orb. Voice lines stay base, no new recall animation either. For a mechanical bird, she still sounds very much like the Cryophoenix.
The model itself does enough heavy lifting to justify the price point I think. In-game the teal energy glow on the chest reads well against the Rift, especially in bot lane river fights where the darker background makes that core pop. Been running this skin in Diamond games occasionally since season 4 maybe, and the silhouette is distinct enough that teammates have commented on it. Not a common sight at all. Seen maybe two other people use it in the last three seasons.
Where Hextech Anivia fits in the lineup
Released March 1, 2011. Early League days. The Hextech skinline was one of Riot’s first thematic lines and Anivia was part of that original wave. Hextech as a concept aged well honestly, Riot kept expanding it into the crafting-exclusive Hextech skins years later, but this one predates all of that prestige stuff.
Legacy vault skin. You cant just walk into the shop and buy it. Sits in the vault and comes out during special events or you get lucky with Hextech crafting. (Random aside: I actually rerolled three skin shards into this one back around season 9 I think, wasnt even trying for it.) No chromas available, which makes sense given the age and tier.
For context on the Hextech line specifically, champions like Janna, Kog’Maw, Singed all got the treatment. Anivia fits the theme naturally because the mechanical bird fantasy works. Some of the other Hextech skins feel forced but a clockwork phoenix? Makes sense.
Should you chase Hextech Anivia?
Real verdict: this is a collector’s skin. Pure and simple. If you’re an Anivia one-trick climbing through ranked and you want the best visual experience, Blackfrost Anivia or Divine Phoenix Anivia blow this out of the water with full VFX overhauls and new voice processing. Hextech Anivia is a model-only change from over a decade ago.
But. Big but. The rarity factor is real. Could be wrong here but I’d estimate under 5% of Anivia mains even own this skin. Last Tuesday in my ranked game the enemy mid laner was running it and our jungler typed “what skin is that” in all chat. That kind of obscurity has its own appeal.
750 RP feels fair for the model quality, especially by 2011 standards. The Hextech aesthetic on Anivia holds up better than you’d expect for a 15-year-old skin. If it drops out of the Legacy vault during an event or you roll it from a chest, keep it. Actively hunting for it though? Only if you’re deep into the Anivia collection. Kinda feels like a skin you appreciate more for what it represents in League history than for what it does in your games. Worth owning, not worth obsessing over.
