First time I saw Hextech Rammus load into my game I had to double check the splash. Not gonna lie, the crystalline shell caught me off guard. Rammus has always been this goofy armored armadillo rolling through the jungle and suddenly he’s made of blue-gold Hextech crystal looking like he belongs in Piltover’s finest museum. Been running this skin since late 2019 after I finally had enough gemstones saved up and I think it might be the cleanest Rammus skin in the game.
The Hextech treatment on Rammus
So what does Mythic tier actually get you here? The model is a full rework. Rammus’s shell is translucent Hextech crystal with gold trim running along every plate. The interior glows with that signature blue energy the whole Hextech line is known for. Looks sharp.
VFX got a proper upgrade. His Q powerball leaves a trail of Hextech particles, blue and gold sparks kicking off the ground as he rolls. The W defensive curl pulses with energy through the crystal shell. Could be wrong here but I think the E taunt has a subtle gear mechanism animation around the target. His R tremors send out Hextech shockwaves across the ground, and in a teamfight around dragon pit last week it looked genuinely impressive with all those blue pulses going off.
The recall animation is where they put in real work. Rammus curls up and a Hextech mechanism assembles around him, gears clicking into place before he gets pulled back to base. Clean mechanical feel to it. Took this into ranked for maybe 40 games when I first got it and the recall alone made me feel like I wasnt playing the same champion.
Voice lines stay base though. No new VO, which is fine because Rammus barely talks anyway. “Ok.” sounds the same in crystal as it does in regular armor. Standard voice, but honestly what would they even add for a champion whose entire personality is one word?
Hextech line and how Rammus fits
The Hextech skinline is one of Riot’s prestige collections. Every champion that gets the Hextech treatment ends up with that blue crystal and gold aesthetic. Rammus dropped into the Hextech catalog on August 15, 2019, somewhere in the middle of season 9. At that point the line already had champions like Hextech Annie and Hextech Kog’Maw setting the standard.
Rammus fits the Hextech fantasy better than you’d expect. The round shell translates perfectly into a crystal orb shape. Some Hextech skins feel forced (sidebar: Hextech Swain still looks weird to me) but this one reads naturally. The gold mechanical joints where the limbs connect to the shell sell the whole clockwork creature vibe.
No chromas on this one. Mythic skins dont get the chroma treatment which makes sense given how you obtain them. This is a Hextech crafting skin, meaning you need Mythic Essence to grab it. Can’t just drop RP in the shop. Special pricing, no standard RP cost. You’re either grinding events or getting lucky with chests.
Kinda feels like that exclusivity is half the appeal. In my Diamond games I see maybe one other Hextech Rammus per season. Played against one around 3 AM on a Tuesday a few patches back and we had a mutual respect moment in the jungle. Two crystal armadillos just vibing.
Rammus mains and the value question
Real verdict: if you main Rammus in jungle, this is arguably the best Rammus skin full stop. The VFX clarity is excellent. Rolling through river with that blue particle trail reads clean against every terrain type. Ganking bot lane specifically, the Q trail gives this satisfying visual feedback when you connect.
Competition is Full Metal Rammus and Guardian of the Sands. Full Metal has the mecha vibe going for it but the particles feel dated at this point. Guardian of the Sands is solid for the Egyptian theme but Hextech just hits different in terms of polish. The crystal transparency on the shell is something neither of those skins attempt.
The Mythic tier price is the real barrier. You can’t impulse buy this. Need to have Mythic Essence saved up or wait for it to rotate into the Mythic shop. Worth the investment if you’re a Rammus one-trick grinding solo queue. Been daily driving this skin for multiple seasons now and I keep coming back to it over every other option in his lineup.
Fair warning though. If you play Rammus casually, like once every 20 games as a comfort pick in jungle, the Mythic Essence is probably better spent elsewhere. But for mains? The shell glow during W, the Q trail, the recall animation. Package deal that no other Rammus skin matches. Spammed this in Diamond through season 12 and 13. No regrets on the craft. S-tier Rammus cosmetic and it earns that Mythic label.
