First time I saw Hextech Poppy load into my game I had to double-check the splash. Poppy in crystalline blue armor with gears and cogs woven into everything, hammer glowing like it was pulled straight out of Jayce’s workshop. Not gonna lie, it caught me off guard how clean it looked for a skin most people forget exists.
What Hextech Poppy actually brings
The model rework here is solid. Poppy’s armor shifts from her usual Demacian steel into this deep blue and gold Hextech plating. The hammer is the star, completely redesigned with visible clockwork internals and a crystal energy core at the head. In lane it reads well against basically any background on the Rift.
New VFX across the board. Her Q slams down with blue hexagonal energy patterns instead of the standard ground crack. Looks sharp. W pops a Hextech barrier with gear-shaped particles spinning outward, and honestly thats one of my favorite parts because you actually notice it in teamfights when you’re peeling for your ADC. E charge leaves a trail of blue sparks, and the wall stun detonates with crystalline shards.
The ult is where it gets interesting. Keeper’s Verdict launches a massive Hextech-infused hammer projectile with trailing gear particles. Been running this in Diamond for a couple seasons on and off, and the R animation feels slightly different in timing even though Riot says it isnt. Could be wrong here but the windup visual cue reads a tiny bit faster to me than base Poppy. Probably placebo from the particle color.
Recall animation is custom. Poppy tinkers with her hammer, pulls out some gears, and the whole thing assembles itself in a burst of blue energy. Short and clean. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is expected for this tier honestly. Kate Higgins still does the work and the base lines fit the fantasy well enough that I dont miss new ones.
The Hextech line and how Poppy fits
Pan Chengwei nailed the splash. The composition puts Poppy front and center with Hextech machinery churning behind her, and the lighting catches the crystal hammer perfectly. One of the better Hextech splashes in the entire line if you ask me (random aside: I had this as my desktop background for like three months in 2019 before switching to the Hextech Swain one).
Released July 23, 2018. Mid-season 8. The Hextech skinline was still in its gemstone era back then, before Riot switched everything over to Mythic Essence. Hextech skins share this consistent blue-gold-crystal aesthetic across champions like Kog’Maw, Swain, Malzahar, and Renekton. Poppy’s version leans harder into the mechanical side than some of the others.
No chromas available. Mythic skins typically skip the chroma treatment which makes sense given the acquisition method. This one sits as Hextech crafting only, so you’re either rolling it from chests or spending Mythic Essence when it rotates into the shop. Seen maybe 4 of these in my games across two full seasons. Rare pick.
The Hextech line works best on champions with prominent weapons or armor pieces. Poppy qualifies on both counts. Her hammer translates perfectly into the gear-and-crystal design language, and the yordle proportions mean the armor plating covers enough surface area to actually sell the theme. Compare that to something like Hextech Ziggs where the theme feels stretched thin.
Is Hextech Poppy worth the Mythic Essence?
Real verdict: this is a strong Mythic tier skin that suffers from one problem. Poppy has competition. Star Guardian Poppy exists. Astronaut Poppy exists. Battle Regalia got a visual update. So you’re spending premium currency on a skin that, while genuinely good looking, sits in a crowded roster.
If you one-trick Poppy and want something nobody else has in your games, this is it. Played against a Poppy main last Tuesday who had this equipped with the Hextech ward skin combo and it looked clean in the top lane specifically. The full Hextech aesthetic commitment hits different when someone clearly chose every cosmetic intentionally.
Might be overthinking it but I think the VFX clarity on this skin is actually above average for Poppy. The blue particles read cleanly against the green of Summoner’s Rift, and in late-game teamfights where you’re diving the backline or using R to peel, the visual feedback feels crisp. Simple change from yellow-gold to blue – huge impact on readability.
For Poppy mains who already own the popular options, Hextech Poppy is a flex pick. S-tier Poppy cosmetic. The crafting-only availability means you wont see mirror matches, the VFX upgrade is meaningful, and the model quality holds up six years later. Skip it if you’re casual on Poppy, but if she’s your go-to for climbing in ranked and you have the Essence sitting around, lock it in. Fair price for the package considering Mythic skins are essentially free if you play enough.
