Astronaut Poppy

First game I played with Astronaut Poppy I ulted a Darius into orbit and my duo said “thats lore-accurate.” Honestly not gonna lie, the skin just fits. Poppy swinging a space hammer around the Rift while wearing a chunky astronaut suit is one of those concepts that sounds goofy on paper but works perfectly once you see it in motion. Been running this as my main Poppy skin since it dropped in 2020 and I keep coming back to it over everything else in her catalog.

What the Astronaut suit actually changes

The model is clean. Poppy gets a full spacesuit with a rounded helmet, and her hammer transforms into this massive sci-fi mallet with glowing accents. The silhouette reads well in teamfights, which matters more than people think on a champion who’s diving the backline or peeling for carries.

VFX got the full treatment for an Epic tier skin. Her Q slams down with this blue energy burst that looks like some kind of thruster impact on the ground. W shield pops with a space-themed particle ring. E charge has a subtle trail behind it. The R is the highlight though. Kinda feels like you’re launching enemies through the atmosphere when you channel the full knockback. Banger animation.

Recall is where the personality shines. Poppy plants a flag on the ground like she’s claiming the moon. Simple concept, solid execution. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the skin doesnt need it. The visual package carries everything here. (Random aside: I set the splash as my desktop background for like three months after buying this skin.)

The Astronaut line and release context

Astronaut Poppy dropped May 28, 2020. Mid-season 10. David Villegas and West Studio handled the artwork, and they nailed the color palette on the splash. Poppy standing on some alien terrain with her hammer planted, helmet visor reflecting light. Good composition.

The Astronauts skinline is one of Riot’s more consistent theme sets. Bard, Corki, Veigar, Gnar all got Astronaut skins at various points. Poppy fits the lineup naturally because her hammer fantasy translates well into the space toolkit aesthetic. Not every champion works with this theme but Poppy is one of those picks where the personality matches.

7 chromas total. Amethyst is my go-to because the purple reads clean against most Rift backgrounds, and Chrono has this dark navy and red combo that feels more serious than the base. Citrine is decent if you want the gold astronaut vibe. The rest are fine but those three get the most rotation in my games. Could be wrong here but I think Ruby is the least interesting of the set, just a red recolor without much personality.

Worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: Astronaut Poppy is a strong Epic skin. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX across the kit, a solid recall, and a model that actually looks distinct from her other options. Last Tuesday I was scrolling through my Poppy skins before a ranked game and picked this over Star Guardian and Hextech without thinking twice. That says something.

For Poppy mains specifically, this competes with Hextech and Star Guardian for best skin. Star Guardian has the prestige factor, Hextech has the rarity flex, but Astronaut has the cleanest ability VFX of the three in my opinion. The Q and R particles just read better in lane and in chaotic teamfight scenarios where you need to track your abilities.

Skip this if you only play Poppy as a counterpick once every 30 games. But if you’re someone who locks in Poppy regularly for top or support, been spamming her in Diamond for engage comps or splitpush angles, this is the skin. Shop has it, permanent availability, no vault nonsense. Might be overthinking it but I think this is the Poppy skin if you can only own one. The space hammer just hits different when you’re sending people flying off your screen with a fully charged R in a dragon pit fight at 25 minutes. Worth every RP.
