Astronaut Veigar

First time I saw Astronaut Veigar load in, I thought someone modded the game. Tiny evil yordle in a full space suit dropping dark matter from orbit. Kinda feels like Riot just said “what if we made the most menacing mid laner adorable” and then actually committed. Been running this in Diamond for a while now and the novelty hasnt worn off. Not even close.

What the skin actually changes

The model is a complete rework of Veigar’s silhouette. He’s in a chunky white-and-orange astronaut suit with a fishbowl helmet, and his staff got swapped for what looks like a satellite antenna. The whole thing reads like a Pixar character wandered onto Summoner’s Rift. Love it.

VFX are where this skin earns the 1350 RP price tag. His Q fires these little cosmic energy bolts with a blue-purple trail. W drops a satellite marker before the dark matter crashes down, and honestly the indicator is slightly cleaner than base, which I think gives you a small visual advantage in teamfight chaos. Could be wrong here but I swear I land more Ws with this skin. His E, the cage, projects as this holographic barrier with floating space debris particles around the edges. Clean.

R is the star of the show. Primordial Burst sends out this massive rocket-shaped projectile. When it connects and deletes someone (which, let’s be real, is every 40 seconds late-game on a stacked Veigar), the impact feels heavier than base. Not sure if it’s just me but the sound design on that ult proc hits different at 2 AM when you’re one-shotting their ADC from fog.

The recall animation has Veigar planting a little flag on the ground and getting beamed up. Short and sweet. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is fine because Veigar’s default lines are already peak villain energy. (Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play with me when I use this skin because the recall animation tilts him for some reason. Been going on since season 11.)

The Astronaut line and release context

Astronaut Veigar dropped July 1, 2021. Mid-season 11. The Astronauts skinline was already established by then with picks like Bard and Poppy, but Veigar fit the theme naturally. Tiny character in an oversized suit. West Studio handled the artwork, and the splash captures the vibe perfectly. Veigar floating in zero gravity with his staff, little stars everywhere.

The Astronauts line is one of Riot’s more consistent thematic sets. Not every champion works in a space suit, but yordles? Easy sell. Veigar specifically works because the contrast between “I will crush you beneath my heel” voice lines and the goofy astronaut aesthetic creates this tension that just makes you smile mid-lane.

8 chromas total. Tanzanite is my go-to, the deep purple brings back some of that classic dark mage energy while keeping the space theme. Rainbow is the flex pick if you want to tilt the enemy laner before minions even spawn. Ruby exists for the completionists but I think it clashes with the space fantasy a bit. Real talk though, most of the chromas are solid here, which isnt always the case with Epic skins. Available any time in the shop at 1350 RP, no vault nonsense.

Should you buy Astronaut Veigar?

Straight talk: this is a top-tier Veigar skin. Maybe not Final Boss levels of legendary rework, but for an Epic? Hard to argue against 1350 RP. The VFX are distinct without being distracting, the model is clean, and the thematic execution is strong. Played maybe 200 games with this skin across two seasons and I keep coming back.

If you’re a Veigar main climbing through ranked, this or Final Boss are your two real options. Elderwood is fine but forgettable. Omega Squad has its fans. Astronaut Veigar hits the sweet spot between fun and functional. The Q and W particles read well in lane, the E cage is visually clear for your team, and the R rocket is satisfying every single time you delete someone from 100 to zero.

Skip it if you dont play Veigar. Obvious statement, I know. But for mains and one-tricks? Been spamming this in Diamond since that ranked game where my Kayn inted three kills pre-6 and I still carried off pure AP scaling. This skin just fits. S-tier Veigar cosmetic, easy recommendation.
