Not sure if it’s just me but the first time I saw Blackfrost Anivia on the enemy team, I legit forgot to move. Mid lane, somewhere around season 3. The Q came through river and the particle was this dark purple shard thing I had never seen before on Anivia. Cost me a flash. Might have cost me the lane honestly. Been running the skin myself since about two weeks after that game and thats been like eleven years now.

How Blackfrost Anivia actually looks in a real game

This is a Legendary skin and it earns that label hard. Anivia drops the whole noble ice guardian aesthetic and goes full corrupted frost. The model is angular, sharp, covered in black crystalline armor with these purple-blue veins running through the wings. Looks like something that crawled out of the Freljord and decided kindness was overrated.

The Q, Flash Frost, sends out a jagged dark ice shard trailing purple energy. Heavier looking than base. Meaner. When it pops and stuns, the shatter effect is noticeably darker. Your W, Crystallize, throws up black ice pillars instead of the usual translucent blue – simple change but it reads so much better in teamfights. Trapped their Katarina in dragon pit last week with that wall and she all-chatted something about the wall being invisible. It’s not invisible. It’s just dark enough that people lose it against the terrain for a split second.

Frostbite on E hits with this purple impact that feels satisfying every single time. But the R is where this skin goes off. Glacial Storm drops a massive swirling vortex of black frost on the ground. The particles are dense. The color contrast against the Rift makes it pop in teamfights around baron or in narrow jungle corridors where Anivia already excels. Had a game last Tuesday where the enemy ADC walked straight into my R three separate times because it blended with the base terrain near blue buff. Three times. Same Jinx.

Voice lines got a full rework too. Anivia sounds colder, more detached. Less “I protect the Freljord” and more “I will freeze you and forget you existed.” (Random aside: some of these voice lines are genuinely unsettling if you listen with headphones.) The recall animation has her summoning dark ice crystals from the ground. Clean, not too long, no unnecessary flourishes.

Release info and the Blackfrost line

Blackfrost Anivia released April 29, 2013. Sperasoft Studio did the splash art. Banger splash. Anivia perched on dark ice with that menacing glow behind the wings, it still holds up over a decade later and I think it looks better than some splashes they ship today. The Blackfrost skinline expanded to other champions eventually but Anivia was the original and, in my opinion, still the best executed of the set.

At 1820 RP this Legendary sits at the standard price point for the tier. No chromas available which kinda feels like a missed opportunity because I would pay actual money for a deep crimson Blackfrost variant. Might be overthinking it but a red-black Anivia with fire-tinted particles would go insanely hard. Skin is still available in the shop so you can grab it whenever or wait for a Legendary sale rotation if you want to save a few hundred RP.

Who should buy Blackfrost Anivia

Look. Anivia is not the most popular mid laner in the game. Never has been. She’s got this dedicated playerbase of mains and one-tricks who been playing her since season 2 or 3, and most of them already own this skin. Know a guy in my ranked games who has 2 million mastery on Anivia and he told me he’s used Blackfrost in probably 90% of those games. Can’t blame him.

If you’re picking up Anivia or you already spam her in ranked, Blackfrost is the skin. No contest. Festival Queen is fine. Papercraft is fine. Divine Phoenix is pretty good actually. But none of them come close to the full Legendary treatment you get here: new VFX on every ability, complete voice rework, custom recall. For 1820 RP you get the whole package.

Been running Blackfrost Anivia in Diamond for years now. Season 9 I think is when I started one-tricking her, or maybe 10, don’t fully remember. Point is I have not gotten bored of this skin. Some Legendaries lose their novelty after a couple weeks and you rotate back to something else. This one just fits Anivia so well that loading into a game without it feels wrong.

Best Anivia skin in the game. Not particularly close either.
