Blackfrost Skins

Blackfrost is one of those skinlines that just nails a specific vibe and commits to it. Corrupted ice, dark magic, creatures that look like they crawled out of some frozen abyss under the Freljord. Been a fan since the Anivia Legendary dropped back in 2013, and honestly the line aged better than most stuff from that era. Seven skins total across a roster that leans heavy into tanky frontliners and monsters, which fits the frozen corruption theme way better than if Riot had slapped it on Lux or Ezreal. Not gonna lie, the color palette alone - deep blacks, glacial blues, that sickly purple glow - makes these skins pop on the Rift in a way that cleaner fantasy lines dont.

What Sets the Blackfrost Line Apart

The visual signature here is corrupted ice. Not clean Freljord frost, not True Ice, not whatever Lissandra's base aesthetic is going for. This is ice that went wrong. Think jagged crystalline formations, dark energy pulsing through translucent surfaces, and a color scheme that sits somewhere between midnight blue and void purple. Every Blackfrost skin shares that DNA.

Splash arts across the line maintain this frozen wasteland backdrop. Shattered glaciers, dark skies, that oppressive atmosphere. Kinda feels like Riot's art team had a clear mood board for every entry. The VFX work ties things together too. Abilities get that frosted particle treatment with darker undertones compared to something like the Glacial or Snow Day lines, which go for a cleaner winter aesthetic.

What separates Blackfrost from similar cold-themed lines is the corruption angle. Glacial skins are just "champion but icy." Freljord skins are lore-accurate winter warriors. Blackfrost takes that ice and makes it menacing. There's an edge to these designs that you dont get from Snow Day Bard or Winter Wonder Lulu. The champions look like they've been consumed by something ancient and frozen, not like they're having a snowball fight.

(Random aside: I used to run a custom Blackfrost desktop theme back in season 10 with all the splash arts as wallpapers. My friends roasted me for it but the aesthetic is genuinely that good.)

The shared design language is strong enough that you could put all seven skins side by side and immediately recognize them as the same family. That consistency is something Riot struggles with in bigger skinlines where 15+ champions dilute the identity. With only 7 entries, Blackfrost stays focused.

Best Blackfrost Skins to Lock In

Blackfrost Anivia is the obvious standout and it's not even close. Legendary tier, 1820 RP, and the skin that launched the entire line back in April 2013. New voice lines, completely reworked ability VFX, the whole package. Her Q feels heavier with the dark ice particles, the wall on W looks like it's made of corrupted crystal, and the ult zone has this ominous swirling effect that just reads better in teamfights. Been spamming this in Diamond on and off for years. The cryophoenix fantasy hits different when she sounds like an ancient evil instead of a noble protector.

Blackfrost Vel'Koz is my second pick. Could be wrong here but I think its the most underrated skin in the entire line. The geometry beams with that dark frost overlay look incredible, especially the R channel. Playing this skin in ARAM last Tuesday, the full combo with Q into E into R had three people in all chat asking what skin that was. Epic tier does a lot of heavy lifting here for 1350 RP.

Blackfrost Sion is a sleeper. Massive frozen juggernaut aesthetic, the ult charge looks like an avalanche of corrupted ice rolling down lane, and his shield particles got the full Blackfrost treatment. If you main Sion in ranked, this competes directly with Mecha Zero for best skin on the champion. Different vibe entirely but equally well executed.

Blackfrost Alistar deserves a mention too. The headbutt-pulverize combo with Blackfrost particles feels weighty. Frozen horns, dark energy crackling off the model. Solid Epic. Not gonna lie though, the engage fantasy on Alistar already works well with his base kit, so Blackfrost adds flavor without reinventing the wheel.

Blackfrost Renekton rounds out the top five. Croc covered in dark ice, fury bar glowing with that signature purple. His W empowered auto with the frozen bite effect is clean. Good skin, probably third or fourth best Renekton option depending on how you feel about Hextech and Pool Party.

The Blackfrost Champion Roster

Seven champions. Anivia, Alistar, Sion, Renekton, Vel'Koz, Rek'Sai, and Shyvana. Might be overthinking it but the roster selection tells you exactly what Riot was going for: big creatures and monsters that sell the corrupted ice titan fantasy.

Anivia is the perfect flagship. She's literally an ice bird. The Blackfrost corruption angle writes itself. Vel'Koz works because void geometry plus ice crystals creates this alien frozen horror that feels unique in his skin catalog. Sion as a frozen undead juggernaut? Natural fit. Rek'Sai burrowing through frozen earth with dark frost particles trailing behind her? Chef's kiss honestly.

Renekton and Alistar are solid but feel slightly less inspired. They're big melee brawlers who got the ice treatment, and it works, but theres less of that "this champion was meant for this skinline" energy. Shyvana through Ice Drake is interesting because it predates the Blackfrost branding - released as a standalone ice dragon skin before Riot formalized the line.

(Sidebar for monster champion mains specifically: this is one of the few skinlines where every single entry is a non-human or beast champion. Riot almost never does that anymore. Appreciate it while it exists.)

Who should be added? Cho'Gath feels like the most obvious miss. Giant void monster covered in corrupted ice? Come on. Ornn would be incredible too, a frozen god-smith with dark ice instead of fire. Volibear post-rework with that eldritch horror angle plus Blackfrost corruption would be terrifying. Honestly surprised none of these have happened yet.

Tier Breakdown and Pricing

The line runs from 975 RP to 1820 RP. One Legendary in Anivia, five Epics across Alistar, Sion, Renekton, Vel'Koz, and Rek'Sai, and one Standard tier with Ice Drake Shyvana at 975. Pretty typical distribution.

Real talk though, the Epics carry this skinline numerically. Five out of seven skins at 1350 RP means the average buyer is spending Epic prices, and the quality justifies it across the board. Not sure if it's just me but the 1350 RP Blackfrost skins punch above their weight compared to other Epic lines from the same era. Might be the strong shared aesthetic doing work.

The Legendary Anivia at 1820 RP is the premium entry and earns every RP with new VO, completely overhauled VFX, and a distinct personality shift. If you're climbing on Anivia this season, its the definitive skin choice. The Standard tier Shyvana at 975 RP shows its age more, being essentially a model swap without the particle work that later entries received.

Price range across the full set means you can get into Blackfrost for under 1000 RP or go all-in at Legendary pricing. Seven skins spanning 2013 to 2021 means the line grew slowly, roughly one skin every year or so, which kept quality consistent instead of flooding the market with filler entries.

Played a ranked game around 3 AM last weekend where our comp was Blackfrost Sion top, me on Blackfrost Vel'Koz mid, and a Blackfrost Rek'Sai jungle. Nobody planned it. The frozen Rift energy was unreal in that lobby. We lost because bot lane fed but the aesthetic victory was ours.
