First time I saw Volcanic Wukong back in like season 1 or 2, I thought Riot was just slapping a red filter on the Monkey King and calling it a day. Played maybe 15 games with it that first week. Turns out thats not entirely wrong, but there’s more going on than I expected for a skin from 2011. The Infernal treatment on Wukong hit different back then when most skins were just recolors anyway.
What Volcanic Wukong actually changes
So this is a Standard tier skin at 975 RP, and you need to set expectations accordingly. No new voice lines. No new recall animation. No reworked ability VFX. What you get is a full model swap that turns Wukong into this molten lava warrior with cracked volcanic armor and a staff that looks like it was pulled straight out of a forge. Solid color work.
The armor plating has these orange-red highlights running through dark stone textures. Kinda feels like Riot took the Infernal concept seriously even before Infernal became a full skinline with dozens of champions. His fur gets this ashy dark tone, and the headpiece trades the classic gold for something more rugged. Been running this in Diamond games on and off for years and the silhouette reads clean in teamfights, which matters more than people think.
Not gonna lie, the staff is probably the best part. It has this ember glow that catches your eye during Wukong’s E dash and when you’re spinning with R in the middle of five people. No custom particles on Q or W though. Voice is unchanged from base. For a 975 RP skin released July 26, 2011, you’re getting a texture and model overhaul and nothing else. But the model work holds up surprisingly well even now.
One thing I noticed last Saturday around midnight in a ranked game where my jungler was playing Wukong with this skin: the ult visually pops harder than base because the dark armor contrasts against the Rift better. Could be wrong here but I think the spinning staff with that lava glow actually makes the hitbox feel more readable for your team. Small thing. Matters in Diamond where people actually try to peel.
The Infernal line and where this fits
Volcanic Wukong is part of the Infernal skinline, which eventually grew into one of Riot’s bigger thematic families. Wukong was one of the earlier entries. Released July 26, 2011, this predates most of the modern Infernal skins by years. No splash artist credited in the data, which tracks for skins from that era when Riot wasnt always documenting their art teams.
The Infernal line works well for Wukong conceptually. Monkey King already has that aggressive dive-heavy playstyle, and wrapping him in volcanic armor sells the fantasy of this unstoppable engage threat. I’ve seen maybe 4 of these in my games all season. Most Wukong mains gravitate toward Radiant or Battle Academia these days, so rocking Volcanic is a low-key flex that says you’ve been around.
(Random aside: the loading screen art for this skin is genuinely intimidating, gives off raid boss energy that most modern splashes try too hard to achieve.)
No chromas available for Volcanic Wukong. Zero. Shop has it as a permanent option for 975 RP whenever you want it. Not locked behind any vault or event pass.
Should you pick up Volcanic Wukong?
Real verdict: this is a solid budget option for Wukong players who want something different without dropping 1350 or 1820 RP. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. The model quality punches above its weight for a Standard skin, even if it lacks the bells and whistles of newer releases.
If you’re a Wukong one-trick climbing through ranked, you probably already own Radiant or Lancer Stratus. Volcanic Wukong is for the rotation. Lock it in when you want that old-school vibe. I think it’s the best pre-rework era Wukong skin by a comfortable margin. Jade Dragon is fine but reads too clean, not enough edge.
Skip this if you only buy skins with new VFX and voice lines. Might be overthinking it but I genuinely believe the darker color palette gives a slight visual advantage in lane. Pre-6 trades where your clone pops out looking like a lava golem just hit harder psychologically. Season 9 I think or maybe 10, I had a Wukong phase where I spammed this skin in like 23 games in a row one weekend. Never got tired of the model. Worth 975 RP if you main Wukong, easy.
