First time I saw Ashen Lord Aurelion Sol load in on the enemy team, I thought someone modded the game. The whole color palette flips from cosmic blue to volcanic orange and black, and it just hits different on the Rift. Been running Aurelion Sol on and off since his release, and this skin stayed in my rotation longer than most. Not sure if it’s just me but the fire theme suits a star-forging dragon way more than the base cosmic look.
What Ashen Lord actually changes
So the big deal here is the VFX overhaul. Every ability gets the Infernal treatment. Q charges up as this molten boulder instead of the usual star, and watching it expand through river during a roam is genuinely satisfying. The W stars become orbiting fireballs, which sounds simple but the particle trail they leave behind makes tracking them in a teamfight way easier for your team. Could be wrong here but I think the contrast against Summoner’s Rift green actually gives you a slight visual clarity advantage.
E still does the galaxy flight thing but wrapped in fire and ash. Looks clean. R knockback gets these eruption-style particles that feel heavier than base, like youre actually slamming someone with volcanic force instead of starlight. The recall animation is new too, Aurelion Sol conjures up this burning sphere and it collapses into him. Short and sweet.
Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Neil Kaplan’s performance on default Aurelion Sol is already top tier so I dont mind that much. The arrogant space dragon voice still works with fire aesthetics. His whole “I am the universe” personality translates fine when he’s wreathed in flames instead of stars.
Model changes are solid for an Epic. Full retexture from head to tail, the horns get a darker treatment, and the body has these magma-crack details running through it. Played maybe 40 games with this last season in Diamond and the in-game model reads cleanly at all zoom levels. No visual clutter.
The Infernal line and where this fits
Ashen Lord Aurelion Sol dropped March 24, 2016. Early season 6. Aurelion Sol himself had just come out that same month, so this was essentially his launch skin. Evan ‘Somnicidal’ Monteiro nailed the splash, the composition with Aurelion Sol looming over a burning landscape sets the tone immediately.
Part of the Infernal skinline, which Riot has built out over the years with picks like Infernal Nasus, Infernal Diana, and others. Kinda feels like Aurelion Sol got the best version of the theme though. A cosmic dragon made of fire just works on a conceptual level that “fire dog Nasus” doesnt quite reach. The Infernal line ranges from great to forgettable, and Ashen Lord sits near the top.
No chromas available for this one. Zero. Which is a shame because I could see an Obsidian or blue-flame variant being incredible. Riot just never went back to add them. Shop has it for 1350 RP, permanent availability, so at least theres no vault anxiety.
Should you pick up Ashen Lord?
Real verdict: for 1350 RP this is a strong buy if you play Aurelion Sol with any regularity. The VFX package alone carries the skin, and the model retexture is above average for the price point. (Random aside: the splash art has been my desktop background at work for like two years and nobody has questioned it.) Compared to Mecha Aurelion Sol which goes full mech-suit, Ashen Lord keeps the dragon fantasy intact while adding the fire element. Storm Dragon is the Legendary competitor at 1820 RP and yeah it’s flashier, but Ashen Lord at 1350 is the better value play.
Real talk though, Aurelion Sol mains are a small crew. Seen maybe five other Ashen Lord users in my games all season. If you’re one of those players who locks in Aurelion Sol and watches the enemy team panic because nobody knows how to lane against him pre-6, this skin makes the experience better. Worth 1350 if you main Aurelion Sol. Skip it if you’re just trying him out, grab the base skin first and see if the playstyle clicks. Been daily driving this one in ranked around 1 AM sessions last week and the fire particles against the dark Rift at night on my monitor look incredible. S-tier Aurelion Sol cosmetic, arguably only behind Storm Dragon in the full lineup.
