First time I saw Underworld Wukong load in, I thought someone modded their client. The green spectral glow on his staff looked nothing like any Wukong skin I’d seen before. Played against one in a top lane matchup around season 5 and immediately went looking for it in the shop. Turns out it was already vaulted by then. Legacy vault skin. Took me almost two years to finally roll it from a chest.
The spectral monkey king treatment
So what actually changes here. Wukong gets a full ghostly overhaul with dark armor plating and this eerie green energy running through everything. His staff looks like it was pulled straight out of some underworld forge. Heavy. The model swap alone is solid for an Epic skin at 1350 RP.
VFX got reworked and thats where the skin really earns its price. His Q cracks down with green spectral energy instead of the standard gold. E dash leaves a trail of that same ghostly particle effect, and when you land on a target in lane the impact feels more threatening than base. W clone is a standout here: the decoy has a slightly different spectral flicker to it that honestly makes it harder for enemies to distinguish in chaotic teamfights. Not sure if it’s just me but I swear the clone reads differently in this skin compared to default.
The R is where things get good. Cyclone spins out green wraith-like energy around Wukong and the particles are dense enough to feel impactful without cluttering your screen. Been running this in Diamond and the ult VFX genuinely feel cleaner to track than some of his other skins. Could be wrong here but the spin radius almost looks visually wider even though it isnt mechanically.
Recall animation is custom too. Wukong does this underworld ritual with his staff, slamming it into the ground and summoning spectral energy around him. Short and clean. No new VO though, voice lines stay base. Spike Spencer’s voice work still fits the vibe surprisingly well.
Where Underworld Wukong fits in Riot’s catalog
Released October 28, 2014. Right before the Harrowing event that year. Sperasoft Studio handled the artwork and they captured something moody with the splash. Wukong standing in this dark realm with green energy swirling, staff planted. Strong composition.
The skin sits in the Death Sworn line, which is one of Riot’s smaller thematic collections. Death Sworn Viktor and Death Sworn Katarina are the other notable entries. Kinda feels like Riot tested the waters with this theme and never fully committed to expanding it. The Death Sworn aesthetic works well on Wukong specifically because the spectral warrior angle fits a fighter who’s all about deception and diving the backline.
One chroma available: Doom. Shifts the color palette from green spectral to a red and purple combo. Personally I think the Doom chroma hits harder than base. The red energy on Q and R pops more against the Rift’s color palette, especially during late-game teamfights around baron pit. (Random aside: the Doom chroma with the dark purple undertones reminds me of those old Diablo 2 necromancer vibes and I’m here for it.)
Should you chase Underworld Wukong?
Real verdict: this is a tough one because it sits in the Legacy pool. You cant just walk into the shop and buy it. Hextech only these days, or wait for a vault opening event. 1350 RP is the listed price but availability is the real cost.
If you main Wukong and you’re climbing with him, there’s better options that are actually purchasable. Lancer Stratus is clean. Battle Academia has the flashy feel. But Underworld has something those dont: restraint. The green spectral theme isnt trying too hard. It’s dark, it’s mean, and when you E into the backline and pop R in a teamfight around dragon pit last Tuesday around 2 AM, the VFX just hit different than any other Wukong skin.
Played maybe 40 games with this one across two seasons. The novelty doesnt wear off because you rarely see it. Seen maybe two other Underworld Wukongs in my Diamond games all season. That rarity factor matters if you care about standing out. Worth 1350 RP if you main Wukong and get lucky enough to roll it. Skip the Doom chroma only if you genuinely prefer the green over red, otherwise grab both if the vault opens. Top three Wukong skin for me, and I’ve tried them all.
