Star Guardian Akali

First game I played with Star Guardian Akali was around 1 AM on a Tuesday, right after the skin dropped in patch 12.14. Locked it in immediately for ranked. Not gonna lie, I wasnt expecting Riot to pull off a magical girl Akali this well. The assassin fantasy mixed with the Star Guardian sparkle shouldn’t work, but it does. Something about the contrast between Akali’s aggressive kit and all that pastel energy just clicks in a way I didn’t anticipate.

How Star Guardian Akali plays differently

This is a full Legendary. New VO, new VFX, new recall, new animations. The whole package. Ashly Burch voices this version and she brought a completely different energy compared to base Akali. Less edgy ninja, more reluctant hero with attitude. The voice lines reference other Star Guardians constantly, and there’s banter that fires off when you’re laning against or with specific champs from the skinline.

Q throws out these star-shaped kunai with trailing light particles. Clean. The W shroud trades the usual smoke for this glittering dome of cosmic energy, and honestly it reads better in teamfights than most Akali skins because the boundary is super visible. Could be wrong here but I think the hitbox visual on E is actually easier to track with this skin. The shuriken leaves a bright trail and the recast dash has this satisfying burst of pink and purple. Feels like it procs faster even though it obviously doesnt.

R is where the skin earns its price tag. Both dashes have massive star-trail VFX. The first cast sends out a wave of guardian energy and the second cast – the execute dash – explodes into this supernova effect on contact. Been spamming this in Diamond for a solid stretch last season and the ult animation genuinely feels smoother. (Random aside: my duo partner thought I was playing a different champ the first time he saw the R2 particle effect.)

The recall animation has Akali interacting with her familiar, doing this whole transformation sequence. It’s long enough that you notice it but not so flashy that it gives away your position from fog. Small detail but matters when you’re recalling after a dive pre-6 and the enemy jungler is somewhere nearby.

Star Guardian Season 4 and the splash

Released July 28, 2022. Season 4 of the Star Guardian line. This was the massive wave that brought in Akali, Kai’Sa, Ekko, Sona, and a bunch of others. Bo ‘chenbowow’ Chen nailed the splash. The composition puts Akali front and center with her kama weapons radiating guardian energy, and the background has this deep cosmic purple that frames everything perfectly.

Star Guardian as a skinline is one of Riot’s most consistent. Season 4 specifically went harder on the rebellious guardian angle and Akali fits that archetype naturally. She’s not the leader type, she’s the one who breaks formation and solo dives the backline. Kinda feels like the design team understood the champion identity and built the Star Guardian version around it instead of forcing the template.

6 chromas total. Ruby gives it a deeper red tone that I think actually competes with the base version for best look. Brilliant shifts everything toward this cotton candy blue-pink split that reads beautifully on the Rift. Emerald is the weird one, green Star Guardian Akali feels off-brand, but some people swear by it in my games. The rest are fine but those three stood out across maybe 40 games where I cycled through them. Permanent shop, 1820 RP. Standard Legendary pricing.

Akali’s skin lineup and where this fits

Akali has a ridiculous number of skins at this point. K/DA, PROJECT, Coven, Spirit Blossom. The competition is real. Star Guardian Akali holds its own because the Legendary treatment gives it a depth that most of her Epic-tier options cant match. New voice lines alone put it above skins like Headhunter or Blood Moon for me.

Real talk though. If you already own K/DA ALL OUT or Coven Akali, the value proposition gets harder to justify. Those skins have strong VFX too. But neither has a full new VO. That’s the differentiator. Been maining Akali with this skin since season 12 and the voice lines keep it fresh in a way that pure visual skins don’t. You hear new interactions, new jokes, new taunts. After 200 games that variety matters more than particle color.

Might be overthinking it but Star Guardian Akali also reads cleaner in pro-style comps. When you’re the engage assassin flanking in a teamfight, the bright VFX actually help your team track your position. Played a game last week where my Janna could consistently peel for me on the disengage specifically because she could see my shroud boundary. That never happens with base skin.

Is Star Guardian Akali worth 1820 RP?

Verdict time. 1820 RP well spent for mains. Full stop. The VO from Ashly Burch carries this skin beyond what the visuals alone would justify. VFX are top tier for Akali’s catalog. The Star Guardian Season 4 theme fits better than it has any right to on an assassin champion.

If you one-trick Akali this is a must-own. If you play her occasionally in ranked, maybe wait for the Legendary sale that rolls around a couple times a year. Skip it if you already have two Legendary-tier Akali skins and your wallet is hurting. But for Akali mains climbing through Diamond and above, this is S-tier. The clarity on abilities, the fresh VO, the six chromas for variety. Hard to argue against it. Best Akali skin if you value the complete package over just splash art clout.
