Empyrean Akali

Locked in Empyrean Akali the night it dropped and played maybe 15 games straight before going to bed at like 3 AM. First impression was the splash hit way harder than I expected for an Epic. Exia Xiaotong and Pandart Studio on the splash, they cooked. The whole cosmic energy vibe reads clean, and in-game the particle work carries more weight than some Legendaries I own. Not gonna lie, Akali already has one of the deepest skin pools in the game, so a new 1350 RP entry needs to justify itself. This one does.

VFX and what actually changes in game

The Q shuriken throw has this layered neon pulse effect that trails longer than base. Looks sharp in lane when you’re poking through the wave. W shroud is where things get interesting. The smoke cloud shifts into this deep purple-blue energy field, and stepping inside it feels different even if mechanically nothing changed. Kinda feels like Riot spent extra time on the shroud specifically because thats what Akali players stare at most.

E marks and dashes leave clean streaks of light behind. Simple change – huge impact on how fluid combos look. R is solid too, the two dashes carry distinct particle trails that pop in teamfights without cluttering your screen. Been running this in Diamond for most of season 14 and the readability is fine. No moments where I lost track of my position, which happens with some flashier skins.

New recall animation fits the Empyrean theme. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the VFX package alone justifies the price for me. You know what surprised me? The passive proc auto has its own distinct glow. Small detail but it makes trading patterns feel more satisfying visually.

The Empyrean line and release context

Empyrean Akali released May 1, 2024. Late into season 14. The Empyrean skinline started strong with the K’Sante and Jhin entries, and by this point Riot had the visual language locked down. Cosmic energy, geometric light patterns, that specific blue-purple palette.

Akali fits the Empyrean aesthetic naturally. The ninja silhouette works with the flowing energy motifs better than some of the bulkier champions in the line. (Random aside: the loading screen art on this one is genuinely my favorite of the entire Empyrean set, including the Legendaries.)

9 chromas total. Sapphire shifts the whole palette cold blue and reads cleanly against the Rift. Neon Facade is the standout though, red and green split that shouldnt work but somehow does. Pearl goes for that clean white energy look if you want something minimal. Could be wrong here but I think the base colors are still the strongest version. Shop has it at 1350 RP permanent, no vault rotation nonsense.

Where Empyrean sits in Akali’s skin lineup

Real talk though. Akali has what, 20 skins now? Competed against K/DA, Coven, Star Guardian, PROJECT. Heavy hitters across multiple price points. Empyrean Akali holds its own in the Epic tier without question. Against other 1350 options like Headhunter or Blood Moon, the VFX work here is a generation ahead.

Played this across maybe 40 ranked games last month specifically in mid lane. The particles read well against every map-side backdrop. Spammed it through a rough losing streak around patch 14.9 and even tilted the skin still looked good. One thing I noticed in my Diamond games is that the shroud VFX can bait people into thinking you already left it because the visual boundary is slightly different from base. Might be overthinking it but I swear I got a couple extra seconds in fights because of it.

If you already own Coven or K/DA ALL OUT, Empyrean Akali isnt mandatory. But if you’re an Akali main building a collection or you want something that feels modern without dropping 1820 on a Legendary, this is the pick. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The Empyrean theme gives Akali a distinct identity separate from her edgy assassin defaults and her pop star era. For one-tricks specifically, you want this in your rotation. S-tier Akali cosmetic at the Epic price point.
