First time I saw Blood Moon Akali in a loading screen was back in like season 2 or 3, and the splash hit different even then. The mask, the red tones, the whole ritual assassin vibe. Not gonna lie, this skin aged better than most stuff from 2011. Played maybe 40 games on it last month just because I wanted something cleaner than the flashier options.

What Blood Moon Akali actually brings

So this is a 975 RP Standard tier skin, which means you’re not getting a full overhaul. Base voice lines, no new VO. But Riot did put in new VFX and a custom recall animation, which for 975 RP back in 2011 was honestly generous. The Q mark pops with this deep crimson particle that reads well against the Rift. Her shroud has a subtle red mist thing going on that I think looks better than half the Epic skins Akali got later.

The recall is themed around the Blood Moon ritual. Akali kneels with that mask energy and it fits the whole assassin-priestess fantasy. Simple change – huge impact on how the skin feels in game.

Ability-wise, the W shroud is where you notice the most. The smoke cloud takes on that Blood Moon red and it actually makes it slightly harder for enemies to track your repositioning in teamfights. Could be wrong here but I swear the color contrast messes with people’s reaction time when you’re looking to dive the backline. Her E and R keep the red particle theme consistent. Nothing groundbreaking on the animations themselves, they move the same as base, but the color swap is cohesive.

No chromas on this one. Zero. Which honestly makes sense given when it dropped. Chromas werent really a thing back then and Riot never went back to add them.

Blood Moon and where this skin sits

Released June 7, 2011. Thats over a decade ago at this point. Zeen Chin nailed the splash, the composition with Akali mid-strike under that blood red moon is clean work. The Blood Moon skinline is one of Riot’s longest running themes and Akali was one of the earlier champions to get it.

Blood Moon as a line has grown massive since then. Thresh, Jhin, Kalista, Yasuo, Diana, Katarina – the roster is deep. But Akali’s version holds up because the assassin archetype just fits the theme naturally. You know what surprised me? How many Akali one-tricks in Diamond still rock this over K/DA or PROJECT. Seen it in my ranked games at least four or five times this season alone.

(random aside: the splash would make a solid phone wallpaper if you crop it right, been using it since last Tuesday)

The Blood Moon line leans into that Ionian demon hunter aesthetic and Akali wearing the ceremonial mask while wielding her kama just works. Been maining Akali with this skin on and off since season 9 I think, and the simplicity is the selling point. No overloaded VFX competing with your gameplay reads. When you’re trying to land Q poke in lane or set up a pre-6 all-in, the particles are visible but not distracting.

Should you pick up Blood Moon Akali?

Real verdict: for 975 RP this is solid. Shop has it, permanent availability, no vault nonsense. If you’re an Akali main climbing through ranked and you want something with personality but not the visual noise of her Legendary or Ultimate options, Blood Moon is the pick.

Best alternative in the same price range is Silverfang, but that one lacks the VFX updates. Infernal exists too but feels dated in a bad way. Blood Moon aged gracefully. Might be overthinking it but I genuinely believe this is the best sub-Epic Akali skin. The 975 RP price point feels fair for the package you get. Not S-tier across her whole catalog obviously, K/DA and PROJECT exist, but for mains who want clean visuals without the peel-your-eyes particle overload, this is it. Spammed this in Diamond last weekend around 1 AM and had three people compliment the skin in post-game. Still hits.
