Rune Wars Renekton

Rune Wars Renekton caught my eye back around season 2, maybe late 2012 when I was still grinding out of Gold. Renekton was my go-to top laner and this skin had that dark fantasy energy that just felt right for stomping lane. First impression? Heavy armor, glowing runes, and a blade that looks like it was forged in something ancient. Sold immediately.

What Rune Wars actually brings to the table

So this is a Standard tier skin at 975 RP, and for that price point it does more than you’d expect. The model rework gives Renekton full plate armor with runic inscriptions running down the arms and legs. His blade gets this massive overhaul too, covered in glowing symbols that pulse during abilities. Not gonna lie, the Q slash feels heavier with this skin even though thats probably just placebo from the VFX.

Speaking of VFX, Rune Wars Renekton does get new visual effects. The Cull the Meek sweep has this runic energy trail, and Slice and Dice leaves faint glyph patterns on the ground. Subtle stuff. His ult activation pops with a rune circle expanding outward, which reads well in teamfights when you’re diving the backline. Clean.

Voice lines stay base, no new VO here. Patrick Seitz still does the voice work and honestly his Renekton performance carries regardless of skin. The recall is also default, nothing fancy. For a 975 RP skin from 2012 though? The VFX additions were generous. Most skins at that price and era got a texture swap and nothing else.

Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack animations feel slightly different too. Might just be the weapon model being chunkier, giving the illusion of more weight. Either way, csing with this skin in the top lane specifically has a satisfying rhythm to it.

The Otherroads line and where this skin fits

Rune Wars Renekton dropped April 30, 2012. Early League days. Zhuore Zhi Hen handled the artwork, and the splash holds up surprisingly well for something over a decade old. Renekton standing in battlefield wreckage with that massive runic blade raised, chunks of magical energy floating around him. Banger splash.

The skin falls under the Otherroads skinline, which is Riot’s catch-all for “what if this champion existed in a different fantasy.” Renekton as some kind of runic warlord works. Fits his aggressive kit better than something like Outback Renekton ever did. The Otherroads concept gives artists freedom and Zhuore Zhi Hen put in the work here.

No chromas on this one. Zero. Which makes sense given the era. Chromas weren’t even a concept when this released. (Random aside: I kind of wish they’d retroactively add chromas to older Legacy skins like this, a blue or gold variant would go hard.)

This is a Legacy vault skin, so you cant just grab it from the shop whenever. It shows up during Legacy sales or special events, and its loot eligible so you might roll it from Hextech chests. Been playing since season 2 and I think I’ve seen maybe 4 or 5 Rune Wars Renektons in my Diamond games all season. Rare enough to turn heads in loading screen.

Should you pick up Rune Wars Renekton?

Real verdict: for 975 RP this skin punches above its weight. The runic aesthetic on Renekton works way better than it has any right to. I grinded about 30 ranked games with this skin last March when it popped up in My Shop, and the VFX on his Q and R made lane trades feel impactful. Pre-6 trades especially, something about seeing those runes fly during a W stun into Q just hits different.

Renekton has flashier options now. Blackfrost and Project exist. But Rune Wars Renekton has that old school charm and the Legacy status means you wont see it every other game. If you’re a Renekton main climbing through ranked, keep an eye out for it in loot or Legacy sales. Worth it. The 975 RP price is fair for the package, especially compared to some of the lazy 1350 RP skins Riot puts out these days.

Kinda feels like this skin gets overlooked because it’s from early League, but it aged better than half the skins from that era. Top pick for Renekton mains who want something distinctive without dropping Legendary money. Been daily driving it on and off for years and keep coming back.
