First time I saw Runeguard Volibear loading in on the enemy team, I thought someone modded a Freljord raid boss into the game. Big armored bear with rune-etched plating covering most of his body. Looked way more threatening than base Volibear. Not gonna lie, I bought it that same night after getting absolutely mauled by one in my Diamond promos back in season 3.
The armor changes everything
So this is a Standard tier skin at 975 RP, which means you’re getting a model overhaul and a new recall animation but no fresh VFX or voice lines. Voice stays default. That said, the model work carries hard here. Volibear gets full runic plate armor across his shoulders, chest, and legs. The runes glow with this cold blue energy that fits the Freljord aesthetic perfectly.
His claws look reinforced, almost like gauntlets. When you’re running at someone with Q and that armored bear is barreling down lane, the visual weight just hits different compared to base. Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack animations feel heavier too, even though mechanically nothing changed. Placebo maybe.
The recall animation is the highlight. Volibear slams the ground and runes light up around him. Simple change – huge impact. For a 975 RP skin from 2013, thats pretty solid. No new particles on his E or R though, so your ult still has the base lightning effect. Played maybe 30 games with this skin last month when I was grinding jungle and honestly the lack of new VFX only bothered me once or twice.
Where Runeguard fits in the timeline
Runeguard Volibear released April 29, 2013. Season 3 era. Volibear was a legit jungle terror back then, people would lock him in and just run at you from river. Xiao Guang Sun and West Studio handled the splash art, and they captured this ancient guardian vibe perfectly. The splash shows him standing in some kind of runic circle with energy crackling off the armor.
The skin falls under the Otherroads skinline, which is Riot’s catch-all for skins exploring alternate versions of champions. Kinda feels like Riot imagined what Volibear would look like as an actual Freljord deity’s chosen warrior instead of just a regular thunder bear. The Otherroads line has some hidden gems and Runeguard Volibear is one of them.
No chromas available for this one. Zero. (Random aside: I keep hoping Riot goes back and adds chromas to older skins like this because a dark iron Runeguard would go insanely hard.) Shop has it permanently, so you can grab it whenever.
Should you pick up Runeguard Volibear?
Real verdict: for 975 RP this is one of the better value Volibear skins if you like the armored fantasy. Been running this in ranked since around season 9 I think or 10 dont remember, and it still holds up visually even after the Volibear rework updated the model. The rework actually made it look better because the new Volibear frame fills out that armor properly.
If you’re a Volibear main who ganks bot lane at level 3 every single game, the intimidation factor of an armored bear diving your tower is real. Not the flashiest option compared to something like Duality Dragon, but Runeguard Volibear earns its price. Best budget Volibear skin full stop. The Thousand Pierced Bear exists for the lore crowd but Runeguard is for players who want their bear to look like he’s about to peel for the backline in a teamfight and then turn around and one-shot the enemy ADC.
975 RP feels fair for what you get. Skip the cheaper recolors and start here if you’re climbing with Volibear this season.
