First time I saw El Rayo Volibear in a loading screen I thought someone modded the game. A luchador bear. Wrestling mask, cape, the whole thing. Played maybe 30 games with it that first week and honestly not gonna lie, the skin just made me want to run at people harder than usual. Something about a masked bear charging your backline hits different.
What the skin actually changes
So this is a Standard tier skin at 750 RP, which means you’re getting a model swap and texture work. No new VFX on Q, W, E, or R. No new particles when you proc your passive stacks. Voice lines stay base. No recall animation either. Straight up cosmetic reskin and thats it.
The model itself though? Clean. Volibear rocks a full luchador outfit with a bright lightning-bolt mask in blue and gold. The cape flows behind him when he runs, and the wrestling belt detail on his torso sells the whole fantasy. Kelly Aleshire nailed the splash, the pose is dramatic with Volibear mid-leap like he’s about to body slam someone off the top rope.
In lane the skin reads well. The colors pop against Summoner’s Rift pretty hard. Blue and gold against the green terrain means your jungler will always see you coming for the gank, which, depending on your elo, could be a good or bad thing. Been running this in Diamond a few seasons back and the silhouette stays readable in teamfights even with all the visual clutter.
Luchador line and release context
El Rayo dropped June 1, 2016. Part of the Luchador skinline alongside El Tigre Braum and El Leon Gnar. Real talk though, the Luchador set is one of Riot’s more fun thematic lines. Not trying to be edgy or cosmic or dark. Just pro wrestling bears and cats.
El Rayo translates to “The Lightning” which fits Volibear perfectly since his whole kit revolves around lightning and storms. (Random aside: I’ve seen exactly two El Rayo Volibears in ranked this entire season and both were jungle one-tricks who absolutely ran the game.) The skin doesnt come up often in my games but when it does people always comment on it in chat.
No chromas available for this one. Zero. Given it’s a 750 RP Standard skin from 2016, not surprising. Shop has it permanently so you can pick it up whenever.
Should you grab El Rayo Volibear?
Okay, the real question. 750 RP feels fair for what you get. The model work is solid for the price point. You’re not getting new ability VFX or a fresh recall, but the luchador fantasy carries hard enough on its own. Could be wrong here but I think this is one of the more underrated Volibear skins in the catalog.
If you main Volibear and you’re looking for something fun that isn’t trying too hard, El Rayo is a good pickup. Played this last Tuesday in a late night session around 1 AM and forgot I even had it equipped until my duo said something about the cape. It just feels natural on him.
The competition is stiff though. Duality Dragon exists. The Thousand Pierced Bear rework skin goes hard. But for 750 RP versus 1350 or more, El Rayo holds its own. Skip it if you only play Volibear occasionally, but for mains who want variety in their skin rotation? Worth the price. Simple change – huge impact on how the champion feels running around the Rift.
