The Thousand-Pierced Bear

First time I saw this skin in a loading screen I genuinely thought Riot had snuck a horror game boss into League. The Thousand-Pierced Bear is Volibear stripped down to what he’s supposed to be: an ancient, terrifying god of the Freljord. Not some armored bear with lightning. A nightmare. Been running this in my Diamond games since it dropped and the reactions from teammates are always the same. Confusion, then respect.

What Volibear actually looks like here

Forget the standard Volibear model. The Thousand-Pierced Bear turns him into this massive eldritch beast covered in spears and broken weapons from warriors who tried to fight him. Kinda feels like Riot finally let the champion design team go full dark fantasy. The model is raw, primal, almost skinless in places. You can see exposed muscle and these glowing red marks across his body.

The VFX got a full rework for a 975 RP skin which honestly surprised me. His Q charge leaves this trail of crackling red energy on the Rift. W bite has a meaty particle effect. E slam reads way cleaner than base in teamfights, the ground indicator has this ancient rune circle vibe. And his R, the ult landing? Massive impact. Red lightning instead of blue. Played maybe 40 games with this thing last season and the ult VFX alone made it worth locking in.

The recall animation is new too. Volibear roars into the sky, weapons piercing through him as he channels some kind of primal power. Simple change – huge impact. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but honestly the base Volibear voice fits this skin better than any alternate would. David Sobolov’s performance already sounds like an ancient god so it works.

The Coven connection and release context

The Thousand-Pierced Bear dropped May 28, 2020 alongside the Volibear rework. This wasnt just a skin release, it was Riot showing what Volibear could have been from the start. Choe HeonHwa nailed the splash, capturing this wounded god emerging from darkness with dozens of weapons stuck in his flesh. The color palette is dark reds and blacks, completely different from Volibear’s usual blue lightning aesthetic.

Part of the Coven skinline thematically, though it sits in its own space. The Coven universe deals with old gods and dark magic, and The Thousand-Pierced Bear is basically the canonical “what if Volibear was the old god lore says he is” skin. Not sure if it’s just me but the Coven connection makes it feel more important than a Standard tier skin should. No chromas available which I think is the right call. This skin doesnt need color variants messing with the vision.

Should you buy The Thousand-Pierced Bear?

Real verdict: 975 RP for new VFX, new recall, and the best Volibear model in the game? Easy buy. I’ve seen maybe five people using this in ranked all season which is criminal. Most Volibear players default to the Duality Dragon or Inkshadow skins but those feel overdesigned to me. The Thousand-Pierced Bear is Volibear at his most honest. No flashy gimmicks. Just a god covered in the weapons of everyone who failed to stop him.

If you main Volibear or play him in the jungle at all, this is the skin. Still in the shop, permanent availability. 975 RP feels fair for what you get, maybe even underpriced considering the VFX work. Been daily driving this since around season 10 I think and keep coming back to it over every other Volibear option. Best Volibear skin full stop. Not the fanciest, not the most expensive, but the one that actually understands the champion. Lock it in, go ganking top lane at level 3, watch people panic when this thing comes charging out of river last Tuesday around midnight. Worth every point of RP.
