Hextech Sion

Played old Sion back before the rework and Hextech Sion was the skin I defaulted to for like two straight seasons. Not gonna lie, there’s something about the copper and blue-green color scheme that just works on a giant undead war machine. The skin dropped June 1, 2010, which makes it one of the oldest Sion cosmetics still floating around in the Legacy pool. Pre-rework Sion was a completely different champion, and this skin somehow survived the transition looking better than it had any right to.

What Hextech Sion actually changes

This is a 520 RP Standard tier skin so set your expectations accordingly. No new VFX on the Q or the ult. Voice lines stay base. No updated recall animation. What you get is a full model swap that turns Sion into this steampunk-adjacent armored construct with glowing blue energy lines running through the plating. Think brass and teal.

The axe gets the biggest visual upgrade. Instead of the default cleaver, you’re swinging around this Hextech-powered weapon that looks like it belongs in Piltover’s workshop district. Kinda feels like Sion raided Heimerdinger’s lab and just grabbed the biggest thing he could find. The shoulder plates have these circular energy conduits that catch light in the splash better than in-game, but the model still reads clean from the top-down camera angle you actually play from.

Been running this in ranked around 2 AM on weeknights when I dont care about tryhard picks, and honestly the skin holds up fine for its age. The auto attack animations feel identical to base, which matters on Sion because you’re constantly weaving autos between abilities in lane. No distracting particles, no visual noise. Clean.

The Hextech line and where this fits

Hextech as a skinline has gone through phases. Early Hextech skins like this one were just thematic model swaps. Cheap. Simple. Later Riot turned “Hextech” into the crafting-exclusive gemstone line and things got confusing. Hextech Sion is from the original era, the 520 RP budget version, not the mythic crafting stuff.

Izzy Medrano handled the artwork on this one. Solid splash for 2010 standards. (Random aside: the old Sion splash arts are genuinely hilarious to look at now, the pre-rework face was something else entirely.) The splash captures the Hextech fantasy well enough, Sion standing there looking mechanical and threatening with that blue glow coming off the armor.

Legacy vault skin so you cant just walk into the shop and buy it. Gotta wait for Legacy sales or get lucky with Hextech crafting. Could be wrong here but I think it shows up during the end-of-year Your Shop rotation sometimes. Seen maybe two of these in my games all season, which tracks for a 14-year-old Legacy skin on a champion that isnt exactly popular in solo queue.

Should you grab Hextech Sion?

Real verdict: 520 RP feels fair for what you get if you can actually find it available. The skin does exactly what a Standard tier cosmetic should do. Different model, different color palette, no pretense of being more than that. Sion mains who want VFX and new voice lines should look at Mecha Zero or Blackfrost instead. Those are in a different league entirely.

But if you’re a Sion one-trick building the collection, Hextech Sion fills a specific niche. It’s the understated pick. The “I’ve been playing this champion since before most of you hit level 30” flex. Took this into a Diamond game last Tuesday and my support actually asked what skin it was. Nobody sees it anymore. That rarity factor alone gives it some appeal for collectors who care about standing out on the Rift.

Skip it if you only want one Sion skin. Grab it if you main the champion and want something different in the rotation. Standard pricing, clean execution for its era. Not every skin needs to reinvent the champion.
