First time I saw Mecha Zero Sion load into my game I genuinely thought the client bugged out. The model is that different from base Sion. This is one of those Legendaries where Riot went completely off-script and turned a undead war machine into an actual giant mech, Pacific Rim style. Been running this skin since season 6 and I still get teammates commenting on the ult animation in Diamond lobbies. Not gonna lie, that says something about a skin thats almost a decade old at this point.
What Mecha Zero Sion actually brings to the table
So the big headline here: Sion transforms into a jet during his R. Full stop. That alone carried this skin for years. You press R and the entire model shifts into this fighter-jet configuration, engines firing, and you barrel down the lane like something out of a Transformers movie. The impact when you hit someone feels heavier than base too. Could be placebo but the screen shake and the metal-on-metal crunch VFX sell it hard.
Q charges up with these hydraulic piston sounds. Genuinely satisfying. The ground slam VFX swaps the undead green for clean orange-red mech energy. W shield pops with a mechanical burst, hexagonal panels shattering outward. E fires a mech fist projectile instead of the weird shouting thing base Sion does – way more readable in teamfights honestly. Every ability got the full treatment which you’d expect at the Legendary tier but Riot really overdelivered here.
The new voice lines are where this skin separates from most Legendaries of that era. Scott McNeil voiced the mech version and the delivery hits that sweet spot between robotic and menacing. Lines reference the Mecha universe lore, callouts to other Mecha skins, combat protocols. Real talk though, the death passive VO where the mech is basically failing and systems are going offline? Chef’s kiss. You feel like a busted-up Jaeger stumbling forward for one last punch. (Random sidebar: I once got a pentakill in death passive with this skin around 1 AM and the mechanical shutdown sounds made it weirdly cinematic.)
Recall animation has Sion transforming partially and doing this diagnostic sequence. Clean work. Pre-6 laning with this skin just feels different because the auto attack sounds have that metallic weight to them. Every cs sounds like youre hammering steel.
The Mecha line and release context
Mecha Zero Sion dropped April 13, 2016. Mid-season 6. The Mecha skinline was already established with Mecha Kha’Zix and Mecha Aatrox but this one pushed the concept further than either. Christian Fell nailed the splash – the composition with the destroyed cityscape and Sion towering over everything captures exactly what playing this skin feels like. Massive. Unstoppable.
The Mecha line leans into the kaiju-vs-mech fantasy and Sion fits it naturally. His base kit is already about being this huge frontline wrecking ball. Strapping mech armor onto that just works. Some skinlines feel forced on certain champs but Mecha Sion is one of those pairings where you go “yeah, obviously.” Might be overthinking it but I think the reason this skin aged so well is because the thematic match is that tight.
8 chromas total if you want variety. Obsidian goes murdered-out black which reads incredibly clean on the Rift, especially at night-side objectives. Tanzanite pulls this deep purple that gives the mech a more villainous energy. Meteorite has an earthy brown-bronze tone that I’ve seen maybe twice in my games all season – underrated pick for sure. The rest cover your standard color spread but those three stand out.
Is Mecha Zero Sion worth 1820 RP?
Verdict time. 1820 RP for this Legendary is genuinely one of the better value propositions in Sion’s catalog. New model, full new VO, completely redone VFX and SFX on every ability, the jet transformation ult, unique recall. For a 2016 skin it competes with stuff released years later. Shop has it permanently so no vault anxiety.
The only real competition is Blackfrost Sion if you want something more modern, and High Noon Sion for the western fantasy. But neither of those turn you into a literal fighter jet. Kinda feels like Riot knew the ult transformation would be the selling point and built everything else around making it feel earned. The Q windup sounds, the W panel-shatter, the E projectile swap – all of it feeds into the “you are piloting a war machine” fantasy.
Spammed this in Diamond across multiple seasons and I keep coming back to it over newer options. The auto sounds alone make last-hitting more satisfying. If you main Sion or even play him as a comfort pick in top lane, this is the skin. Been playing maybe 300 games with it across ranked and normals and the novelty of that ult transformation still hasnt worn off. Season 9 I think I had a stretch where I played 23 games of Sion in a row one weekend and Mecha Zero was locked in for every single one.
Worth 1820 RP if you main Sion. Arguably the best Sion skin full stop, and I say that knowing Blackfrost exists. The jet form R is a top-5 ability animation in the entire game. Hard to argue against that at any price point.
