Not gonna lie, Barbarian Sion caught me off guard when I first saw it loading in. You expect some generic reskin on a 750 RP Standard tier skin from 2010 and then Sion walks out looking like he just crawled out of a Conan movie. Been running this one on and off since I picked up Sion as a secondary top pick around season 11, and there’s something about the raw simplicity that keeps pulling me back.

What Barbarian Sion actually gives you

So lets be real about what you’re getting here. No new VFX. Voice lines stay base. No recall animation either. This is a model and texture swap, full stop. Sion trades his default undead warlord armor for a barbarian loincloth-and-fur setup with exposed muscle and tribal war paint. The axe gets swapped too, something more crude and primal looking.

The color palette shifts from dark steel tones to earthy browns, reds, and exposed grey skin. Kinda feels like Riot took the fantasy barbarian archetype and just grafted it onto Sion’s frame. Q still slams with the base particles, W shield looks the same, E shout is unchanged, R charge is identical. Playing this in a Diamond game last Thursday I actually forgot I had the skin on for a second because the abilities read exactly like default.

But the model itself does work. The proportions feel right on Sion’s massive frame. When you’re ulting down a lane at someone’s backline, the barbarian look sells the aggression better than some of his more armored skins. Simple change – huge impact on the fantasy even if nothing mechanical shifts. (Random aside: my duo partner once called this skin “discount Tryndamere” and I havent forgiven him.)

Rift Quest origins and the splash

Barbarian Sion dropped September 26, 2010. Pre-rework Sion era. Ancient history. The skin survived the full champion rework and honestly looks better on new Sion than it ever did on old Sion. Jessica ‘OwleyCat’ Oyhenart and Christian Fell handled the artwork, and they captured something primal in that splash.

Part of the Rift Quest skinline, which is Riot’s tabletop RPG fantasy theme. Think D&D party comp but League champions. The Rift Quest line has some fun entries and Barbarian Sion fits the archetype perfectly. Big dumb melee bruiser with an axe. Could be wrong here but I think this is one of the skins that actually defines its skinline role better than most.

750 RP price tag. Shop has it, permanent availability. For a skin from season 1 thats about what you’d expect. No chromas available, which makes sense given the era and price point.

Should you pick up Barbarian Sion?

Real verdict: if you main Sion and you want variety in your rotation, 750 RP is nothing. Grinded ranked with this equipped for maybe 30 games in a row one weekend back in February 2025. The skin doesnt get old because it doesnt try too hard. No flashy effects to get tired of.

The competition in Sion’s skin catalog is stiff though. Mecha Zero exists at Legendary tier with full new VO and effects. Blackfrost Sion goes hard on the visual overhaul. Worldbreaker has that imposing feel. Barbarian Sion sits in budget territory and owns it. Best pick for Sion mains who rotate skins frequently and want something clean without the Legendary price commitment. 750 RP feels fair for what you get. You know what surprised me? How often I get compliments on this one in post-game lobby. People respect the vintage pick, especially in the bot lane specifically when I’m running Sion support into engage comps and the barbarian aesthetic just hits different while you’re peeling for your ADC. Worth it for mains, skip it if you already own Mecha Zero or Blackfrost.
