Winged Hussar Xin Zhao is one of those 2011 era skins people sleep on because it’s Legacy vault now and genuinely hard to get. Real talk though – when I first locked this in during a ranked session in season 10, the cavalry plate armor and historical aesthetic hit different than expected. Could be wrong here but this is one of the cleaner historical concepts Riot executed for a melee carry, and Xin Zhao mains know why.
What Winged Hussar Xin Zhao actually changes
At 975 RP, Standard tier, this is a costume swap and nothing more. No new VFX. No new recall. Voice stays base – Richard Epcar’s performance carries over unchanged. What you’re buying is the model: Xin Zhao in heavy plate armor styled after Polish winged hussars, the real historical cavalry units with feathered wing structures mounted on the armor. Those wings translate into the in-game design and the lance is noticeably more ornate than base.
Color palette goes silver and gold with dark accent plating across the chest and shoulders. Reads clean in teamfights. The Q, W, E, R animations are all base on the hussar model, so when you proc Three Talon Strike into a full engage dive, there’s no extra particle work. 975 RP skins from this era werent built with VFX suites – that expectation didn’t exist yet. (random aside: I cross-referenced the wing shape against actual hussar armor images once and Riot got the proportions surprisingly right for a 2011 skin.)
For Xin Zhao mains who run him as hard engage into the backline, the cavalry knight fantasy fits the kit naturally. Pre-6 aggression, ganking lanes, the visual of a charging hussar – it lines up in a way the default model doesn’t.
Release, artist, and the Wonders of the World line
Released September 26, 2011. Robin Ruan handled the splash – cavalry charge composition, lance forward, wings spread. Clean execution.
The Wonders of the World skinline is a loose historical-themed collection, not a tight universe. More like Riot pulling from real military aesthetics across different champions. Xin Zhao in hussar armor is an obvious fit: aggressive charges, spear combat, the whole engage-heavy kit mapped onto a historically accurate cavalry role. Good concept for the line.
Legacy vault skin now. Not in permanent shop rotation, so catching Winged Hussar Xin Zhao means either a vault event or rolling it from Hextech chests. Seen it maybe twice all season in Diamond ranked lobbies. Rare in the wild.
Is Winged Hussar Xin Zhao worth hunting down?
Real verdict: if you main Xin Zhao and want the grounded historical knight look, yes. The model holds up better than most 2011 skins. No VFX to carry teamfight moments, but the armor silhouette is distinct enough that you read it immediately in any comp.
Dragonslayer Xin Zhao has actual new VFX and is easier to get – if pure gameplay enhancement matters, that’s probably the move. But Winged Hussar hits a different note: serious plate armor over dragon fantasy. Worth the 975 RP for mains. Everyone else, wait for a Hextech chest drop.
