Cosmic Defender Xin Zhao

Been running Cosmic Defender Xin Zhao in solo queue since season 8 and the skin has aged way better than I expected. This is an Epic at 1350 RP that actually earns it – full VFX overhaul, new recall, and a splash art that puts most of Xin Zhao’s other skins to shame. Planetary debris, star energy, the whole thing. Thematic execution here is genuinely impressive for the price point.

What Actually Changes with Cosmic Defender

The Q – Three Talon Strike is the first thing you notice. Each hit leaves cracking cosmic energy on the target, and the third strike proc pops with a burst of starlight that reads clearly when you’re diving one person in a lane prio situation. Doesn’t obscure hitboxes weirdly either, which is more than I can say for some Epics. The W – Wind Becomes Lightning becomes what looks like a stellar shockwave pulse. Blue-white, clean, doesn’t clash with the model. Solid.

E – Audacious Charge lands with a ring of cosmic particles flaring out from the target on contact. Subtle effect but you actually feel it during ganking phases – the engage snap has weight to it now. And then there’s the ult. Crescent Guard plants a zone of starfield light around Xin Zhao that pulses with deep-space energy. Best part of the whole skin. Wasnt expecting the R VFX to hit that hard for an Epic, but here we are.

New recall on top of all that. Xin Zhao drives his spear into a chunk of cosmic rock and meditates while it pulses with starlight. Satisfying loop. Base voice lines, no changes – Richard Epcar’s default VO holds up well enough that you don’t really miss new lines here.

Release, Artist, and the Cosmic Line

Cosmic Defender Xin Zhao dropped August 21, 2018 – late season 8, close to the Worlds 2018 run. Alex ‘alexplank’ Flores put in the work here. The splash shows Xin Zhao mid-dive against a deep nebula backdrop, spear angled forward, cosmic energy trailing the whole frame. (sidebar for Xin Zhao mains specifically: his skin catalog is not good overall, and this splash is doing a lot of heavy lifting for the brand.)

The Cosmic line splits into two factions – destroyers and defenders. Xin Zhao lands on the defender side, which makes thematic sense because his whole kit is built around engage, peel, and protecting backline carries in a teamfight. Not a lot of design logic gets applied to Xin Zhao skins, so the fact that someone thought about faction placement here is appreciated.

There’s 5 chromas total. Obsidian is the sleeper pick – it flips the palette nearly all the way dark, turns the cosmic blue into void-black energy that looks genuinely threatening in lane. Tanzanite goes deep violet, which I think actually reads cleaner against most Rift backgrounds than the base skin. Citrine throws in an unexpected gold-orange take that sounds wrong on paper but pulls it off. Grab it in the shop – still permanent at 1350 RP.

Is Cosmic Defender Xin Zhao Worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is the Xin Zhao skin if you can only own one. The VFX are complete across all four abilities, the recall has genuine personality, and the splash is legitimately in the upper tier of his catalog. Played maybe 200 games with Cosmic Defender across seasons 8 and 9 in Diamond and never felt the urge to swap back to base.

Kinda feels like this skin gets overlooked because Xin Zhao has been out of the meta for stretches at a time, but the cosmetic quality is there regardless. Warring Kingdoms is cheaper and fine for traditionalists. Dragonslayer has name recognition. But neither of them transform how the champion reads on the Rift the way Cosmic Defender does. 1350 RP well spent for mains.
