Cosmic Invoker Illaoi

First game I played with Cosmic Invoker Illaoi was a late night ranked session, maybe 1 AM on a Wednesday. Locked in Illaoi top against a Darius and immediately noticed the tentacles. They glow with this deep cosmic purple energy that fills the lane with particles every time they slam down. Felt like I was playing a completely different champion. Not sure if it’s just me but something about the space theme on a tentacle priestess just works in a way I didnt expect.

How Cosmic Invoker changes Illaoi’s kit

The VFX overhaul carries this skin. Every tentacle spawn has this swirling galaxy effect, and when you hit W the slam sends out starbursts across the ground. Her Q sends a cosmic wave that leaves behind a trail of nebula particles. Looks clean against the Rift’s green backdrop. The E is where it really shines though. Pulling a spirit out of someone has this constellation tether connecting them, and the ghost itself has a translucent starfield texture. Played maybe 40 games with this skin in Diamond and the E pull animation still catches my eye every time.

The recall animation is solid. Illaoi channels cosmic energy through her idol and you get this expanding galaxy forming around her. Short and punchy.

Voice lines stay base. Standard for a 1350 RP Epic tier skin. Rolonda Watts did great work on the original VO anyway so it doesnt feel like a loss. The model itself trades Illaoi’s usual Buhru priestess look for cosmic armor with deep blues and purples. Her idol gets a full redesign into this celestial orb thing. Tentacles look like they’re made of dark matter. Real talk though, the tentacles are the main character here. In a teamfight with three or four of them slamming at once the screen lights up like a planetarium.

The Cosmic line and release context

Cosmic Invoker Illaoi dropped November 24, 2020. Season 10 was wrapping up. West Studio handled the artwork and they captured Illaoi’s raw power while translating it into the space fantasy. The Cosmic skinline is one of Riot’s more consistent themes. You’ve got Cosmic Reaver Kassadin, Cosmic Enchantress Lulu, the whole lineup. Illaoi fits the “cosmic entity” vibe naturally because her whole kit revolves around summoning things from another plane.

7 chromas available total. Obsidian is the standout for me, takes the whole skin dark and the tentacles read almost like void energy. Amethyst leans harder into the purple mage fantasy and honestly looks cleaner than the base palette in certain lighting. Rose Quartz exists for the pink enjoyers. (Random aside: my duo partner bought every single chroma day one and still only uses Obsidian, so make of that what you will.)

Should you pick up Cosmic Invoker Illaoi?

Okay, the real question. If you main Illaoi this is competing with Resistance Illaoi and Snow Moon Illaoi for the top spot. Could be wrong here but I think Cosmic Invoker edges out Resistance purely on VFX clarity. The tentacle slams read better against most map skins and the color contrast in lane is noticeable. Been running this as my go-to Illaoi skin since season 11 and keep coming back to it over the alternatives.

Overpriced? For an Epic, no. The VFX package is above average for 1350 RP. You get a full particle swap on every ability plus a custom recall. No new VO but thats expected at this price point. Skip it if you never play Illaoi, obviously. But for Illaoi mains or anyone who splitpushes top and wants their tentacles to look like cosmic horrors instead of regular horrors, 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Seen maybe 5 of these in my games all season which means you wont run into mirror skin situations in solo queue. Best Illaoi skin if you want the flashiest VFX without paying Legendary prices.
