First time I saw Cosmic Blade Master Yi load into my game I thought someone was running a custom skin. The purple and gold palette is so far removed from base Yi that it barely registers as the same champion. Been running this as my go-to Master Yi skin since around mid-season 7, and honestly the novelty hasnt worn off. Something about the way the cosmic energy wraps around the blade model just clicks.
What Cosmic Blade actually brings to the table
This is a 1350 RP Epic tier skin, so you get the standard package: new model, new VFX, new recall animation, base voice lines. No new VO refresh. For the price point though, the visual overhaul is solid. Master Yi’s armor gets this deep space treatment with constellation patterns running through it, gold trim that catches light differently depending on the angle. The helmet redesign is probably the biggest win here. Sharper, more angular, feels less like a meditating swordsman and more like something that dropped out of a nebula.
The VFX work is where Cosmic Blade earns its keep. Alpha Strike sends Yi through targets with trailing star particles. Clean read on it. His Q leaves these little cosmic ripples at each target location, which is a nice touch you dont notice until you’re reviewing replays at like 2 AM on a Tuesday. Wuju Style activation wraps the blade in this concentrated purple energy that pulses. Meditate gets a cosmic circle beneath him with rotating celestial symbols. Highlander is the standout though. Full activation turns the trail effects up to eleven, streaking purple and gold behind every auto. In a teamfight it looks incredible. Maybe too incredible. Not gonna lie, I’ve lost track of my positioning a couple times because the particle effects were so dense during a late-game 5v5.
The recall animation has Yi channeling cosmic energy through his blade before ascending. Standard fare for an Epic skin recall but it fits the theme well.
The Cosmic line and where Yi fits
Cosmic Blade Master Yi released April 26, 2017. Right in the middle of season 7. Jean “Curing” Go handled the artwork, and the splash is genuinely one of the better ones in Yi’s catalog. The pose captures movement without looking forced, which is harder than it sounds for a champion whose whole identity is “guy who runs at you fast.”
The Cosmic skinline is one of Riot’s more consistent thematic lines. Yi slots in naturally alongside picks like Cosmic Queen Ashe and Cosmic Reaver Kassadin. The shared visual language of deep space purples, gold accents, and constellation motifs ties them together without making any individual skin feel like a copy-paste job. Kinda feels like the Cosmic skins peaked around this era before Riot started spreading the line thinner across too many champions.
No chromas on this one. Zero. Which is unusual for a 1350 RP skin released in 2017, but the base color scheme is strong enough that I dont feel like I’m missing out. The purple and gold works. Shop has it permanently, so no vault anxiety.
(Random aside: I used the Cosmic Blade splash as my Discord profile picture for like eight months straight and nobody even recognized it as Master Yi. That’s how different the design reads from his default.)
Worth the 1350 RP?
Real verdict: Master Yi has a stacked skin lineup. PROJECT Yi exists. Eternal Sword Yi exists. Spirit Blossom Master Yi exists. Cosmic Blade holds its own against all of them. Maybe just my experience but in Diamond lobbies I see more Cosmic Blade Yi players than any other skin on him except PROJECT. There’s a reason for that.
The VFX clarity is excellent for gameplay. Your Q targets are clearly marked, your W circle is readable, your R activation is unmistakable. Some Yi skins sacrifice readability for flashiness. Cosmic Blade threads that needle well. Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack animations feel slightly smoother on this skin too, though that might be placebo from the particle trails.
Played maybe 200 games with this skin across seasons 7 through 10 before rotating to Eternal Sword. Kept coming back to it. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. If you’re a Master Yi main who wants something that looks premium without dropping Legendary money, this is the pick. If you already own PROJECT Yi and want variety, Cosmic Blade is different enough in theme to justify the purchase. Skip it only if you’re saving for Spirit Blossom Master Yi, which is the newer competitor in the same price bracket.
Top pick for Master Yi mains who want the space fantasy over the tech or traditional aesthetics. The Cosmic line did Yi right.
