Xin Zhao has one of those skin catalogs that flies under the radar for most players. Eleven skins total, zero Legendaries, and honestly the collection punches way harder than you'd expect from a champion Riot seems to forget about for long stretches. Been playing Xin since season 3, mostly as a jungle pick in Diamond, and I've cycled through almost every skin he has at this point. Some are genuinely great. Some are 520 RP relics from 2010 that show their age. The gap between his best and worst skins is massive, and thats what makes picking the right one actually matter.

How Xin Zhao's Skin Collection Shaped Up Over 12 Years

Xin Zhao launched in 2010 and his earliest skins came out that same year. Commando Xin Zhao was the first, a basic military reskin that looked fine for the era but hasn't aged well at all. Imperial followed shortly after. Both are Standard tier at 520 RP and honestly feel like they belong in a museum at this point. No new particles, no new animations, just texture swaps on the base model. Fine for 2010. Rough by today's standards.

The collection sits at 11 skins spanning from 2010 to 2022. Five Standards, six Epics. No Legendary, no Ultimate, no Mythic. Kinda feels like Riot never thought Xin was popular enough to justify the full treatment. Could be wrong here but I think they missed an opportunity somewhere around the 2021 rework to drop a Legendary for him. The kit update made his animations way smoother and a Legendary with new VO would have been clean.

What's interesting is the trajectory. Early skins were budget stuff. Then Warring Kingdoms dropped in 2015 and suddenly Xin had a real skin. Dragonslayer came after, Cosmic Defender, Marauder, Firecracker. The Epic tier skins kept getting better. Not gonna lie, the 1350 RP options for Xin are stacked compared to a lot of champions with double his skin count. Quality over quantity situation.

(Random thought: Xin Zhao mains are some of the most loyal players I've run into in ranked. Like they dont switch champions, they just switch skins and keep running it.)

The year gaps tell a story too. 2010 had three skins at launch basically. Then nothing until Warring Kingdoms in 2015. Five year drought. After that Riot figured out his niche and started putting him in skinlines that actually fit a spear-wielding warrior fantasy. The 2015 to 2022 run gave him six skins, all Epic, all solid. Way better pacing.

Best Skins for Xin Zhao

Warring Kingdoms Xin Zhao sits at the top for me and I dont think it's close. Released during Lunar Revel, the skin turns him into a proper dynasty warrior general. Red and gold armor, the spear gets ornate detailing, and the particles have this warm fire-red glow on his Q thrusts and W sweep. His E dash leaves a trail that actually reads well in teamfights. Played maybe 150 games with Warring Kingdoms across season 6 and 7 and it still feels like his definitive look. 1350 RP. Worth every point.

Dragonslayer Xin Zhao is the aggressive alternative. Dark armor with dragon motifs, orange-flame particles on abilities. The W cone looks especially clean with the fire effects. His ult sends out this ring of flame that reads better than base in chaotic 5v5s. Been running this one in my jungle games when I want something darker than Warring Kingdoms. The Dragon World skinline fits Xin naturally because the whole champion fantasy is already about a warrior proving himself in combat. Spear plus dragon aesthetic just works.

Cosmic Defender Xin Zhao takes a completely different direction. Space theme, purple and blue star particles, his spear becomes this glowing cosmic lance. Might be overthinking it but the Cosmic line gives Xin a grandeur he doesnt usually have. The Q hits leave little star bursts. R creates a galaxy-looking barrier. It's flashy without being distracting. Good skin for ranked because the particle clarity is actually excellent. Played this through most of season 11 when I was climbing back to Diamond after a rough placement streak.

Marauder Xin Zhao surprised me. The Marauder line is hit or miss across champions but Xin got a good version. Dark corrupted armor, red energy effects, menacing silhouette. Feels like playing the villain version of Xin which is a fun change of pace. Not the most popular pick I see in my games but the people who use it tend to be one-tricks who know what they're doing. Fair warning, the splash is better than the in-game model on this one. Still solid at 1350 though.

Firecracker Xin Zhao rounds out the top five. His newest skin from 2022, part of the Lunar New Year celebration lineup. Red and gold again like Warring Kingdoms but with a festive twist. Firework particles on abilities, the recall animation is fun. Honestly its a good skin that suffers a bit from being in the same thematic space as Warring Kingdoms. If you already own Warring Kingdoms you might not feel the need for this one. But if you're picking your first Xin skin in 2024 or later, Firecracker is the most modern option with the cleanest particle work.

Skinlines and Themes That Fit Xin Zhao

Xin Zhao shows up in eight different skinlines across his 11 skins. The Lunar Revel: Warring Kingdoms line is the best fit by far. Not sure if it's just me but the whole ancient Chinese warrior general thing IS Xin Zhao's core fantasy. The skin doesn't feel like a costume, it feels like his real identity. Same reason Warring Kingdoms Jarvan works so well.

The Cosmic line was a smart pick for him. Cosmic Defender Xin Zhao takes the protector/warrior archetype and scales it up to galactic level. Works thematically because Xin's kit is all about diving in to protect or engage. The defender angle fits his R especially, that whole "create a safe zone around yourself" mechanic translates perfectly to cosmic guardian energy.

Dragon World with Dragonslayer was another natural pairing. Warrior plus dragons. Classic. The Commando line from his early days is more generic military stuff that works fine but doesn't capture what makes Xin unique as a champion. Secret Agent Xin Zhao from the Cops and Robbers skinline is the weirdest thematic stretch. Xin in a suit with a spear feels off. Like putting Garen in a tuxedo. It exists. Moving on.

Real talk though, Xin benefits most from skinlines that lean into historical warrior or fantasy warrior themes. The further you get from that core identity the less the skins resonate. Winged Hussar is an exception, that one pulls from Polish cavalry history and the wing motif on the armor looks great even by modern standards despite being a 975 RP Standard skin.

Budget vs Premium: Getting the Most From Xin Zhao Skins

Here's the thing with Xin Zhao. His price range runs from 520 to 1350 RP. No Legendary means your max spend is 1350. Good news for your wallet.

At the budget end, Winged Hussar at 975 RP is the best value Standard skin in the collection. The wing armor design stands out even without new particles. Commando and Imperial at 520 each are fine if you literally just want something different from base but I wouldnt recommend them in 2026. Viscero at 520 has a cool blood-red color scheme but again, no particle changes.

The six Epic skins at 1350 are where the real value sits. Every single one has new particles, recall animations, and model work that actually justifies the price. If I had to pick one skin for Xin and never buy another, Warring Kingdoms. Period. Best particles, best thematic fit, best feel in game. Been my go-to Xin skin since it dropped and nothing has dethroned it.

For players who want variety without going broke, grab Warring Kingdoms plus either Cosmic Defender or Dragonslayer. Those three cover different aesthetics - traditional warrior, space guardian, dragon hunter - and rotate well so you dont get bored. Three skins at 1350 each is 4050 RP total. Less than one Legendary on most other champions. Solid deal.
