First time I saw PROJECT: Vayne load into a game I thought my client bugged out. The whole model just hits different from base Vayne. Not gonna lie, I stayed on this skin for maybe four straight months when it dropped back in 2017 and barely touched another ADC during that stretch. Something about the cyberpunk aesthetic on a champion who already feels like a hunter just clicked for me.
How PROJECT changes Vayne’s kit
This is a full Legendary rework and it shows. Every ability got the treatment. Her Q tumble leaves this neon trail on the ground, electric blue with data fragments scattering off the roll. Feels snappier than base even though the animation timing is identical. Placebo? Probably. But I swear my kiting improved the first week I used it.
W procs are where it gets interesting. The Silver Bolts replacement shows these holographic rings stacking on the target, and when the third hit lands you get this satisfying digital burst. Clean visual feedback. In a teamfight where you’re trying to track your own damage among five other champions throwing particles everywhere, those rings actually help. Practical VFX on a skin is rare.
E condemn fires this energy bolt that looks heavier than base. Pin someone into a wall and theres this circuit-board crack pattern that spreads from the impact point. Small detail but I notice it every time. The R transformation is the real showpiece though. Night Hunter becomes this full cyborg mode activation, visor drops, the crossbow unfolds into something more mechanical. Movement trail goes full Tron. Been running this in Diamond ranked for years at this point and the ult activation still feels powerful.
New recall animation has her interfacing with some kind of PROJECT terminal. Standard sci-fi stuff but it fits. The auto attack animations got reworked too, each bolt is this precise energy round instead of the base crossbow bolts. Smoother wind-up on the autos, at least visually.
Voice lines and the PROJECT fantasy
Full new VO. Alexa Kahn voices this version and the delivery is cold, calculated, very much the augmented operative vibe. Lines reference the PROJECT universe lore, mentions of “the program,” identity fragmentation, that whole theme Riot was building. Compared to base Vayne who’s all about monster hunting and her parents, PROJECT: Vayne feels like a completely different character.
Kinda feels like Riot peaked with this batch of PROJECT skins. The 2017 wave had Vayne, Jhin, Vi. Strong lineup. The skinline itself is one of Riot’s most developed, spanning something like 20+ champions at this point. But the earlier entries still hold up better than some of the later ones. PROJECT: Vayne specifically avoids the over-designed trap that later PROJECT skins fell into. The silhouette stays readable, the colors dont bleed into visual noise.
(Random sidebar: I used to have the PROJECT: Vayne splash as my Discord profile pic for like two years. No regrets.)
Pan Chengwei nailed the splash art. The composition puts Vayne mid-tumble with that crossbow extended, cityscape behind her, all sharp angles and neon. It captures the skin better than most splash arts capture their skins. The color palette is mostly silver and blue with red accent lighting. Could be wrong here but I think this splash influenced how Riot approached the cyberpunk aesthetic for future skinlines.
Release context and where it sits now
PROJECT: Vayne released November 22, 2017. Late season 7. That was around the time Vayne was actually meta in bot lane, press the attack had just come out and Vayne was abusing it. So you had this perfect storm of a strong champion getting a premium skin. Every other game in my Diamond lobbies had a Vayne locking in with the PROJECT skin equipped. Maybe that was just me noticing it more because I was spamming her too.
No chromas on this one. Legendary skins from that era didnt get chromas, Riot started that practice later. Honestly I think PROJECT: Vayne’s color scheme is strong enough that it doesn’t need variants. The silver-blue works. Still in the shop at 1820 RP. Full Legendary price.
The PROJECT line has gotten huge since then. Started with Yasuo back in 2015 I think, or maybe late 2014. Vayne’s entry is solidly mid-era for the line. Not the original wave, not the later bloated additions. Sweet spot.
Should you buy PROJECT: Vayne?
Real verdict: this is still a top-tier Vayne skin years after release. The competition is stiff now. Spirit Blossom Vayne exists. Dawnbringer exists. Sentinel is solid. But PROJECT holds its own because the fantasy is so distinct from every other Vayne skin. None of her other skins go full cyberpunk.
1820 RP feels fair for what you get. New model, new VFX on every ability, full voice over, new animations. That’s the Legendary package and PROJECT: Vayne delivers on all of it. I’ve seen maybe three Vayne skins rotate through my main loadout over six seasons and this one keeps coming back.
If you main Vayne and you like the sci-fi aesthetic, this is a no-brainer. If you’re more into the elegant or fantasy direction, Spirit Blossom or Dragonslayer might suit you better. But for the cyberpunk hunter vibe, PROJECT is the Vayne skin if you can only own one from that category. Last Tuesday I locked in Vayne for a late night ranked session, put on PROJECT, and immediately remembered why this skin has stayed in my rotation since season 7. The Q tumble alone is worth it. Permanent shop, grab it whenever.
