First game I played with Pool Party Gangplank I dropped a barrel combo on three people in river and the water explosion VFX made it look like a pool cannonball. Honest moment. Been maining Gangplank on and off since season 7 and this skin just fits the vibe of someone who wants to blow people up while looking like they belong at a beach resort. Not gonna lie, the first time I saw the splash I thought it was goofy, but in-game this thing carries itself way better than you’d expect from a 1350 RP Epic.

Visual and gameplay changes on Pool Party Gangplank

The model swap is solid. Gangplank trades his pirate captain getup for board shorts, a Hawaiian shirt left open, and flip-flops. His sword becomes what looks like a giant pool noodle sword hybrid. Ridiculous concept that somehow works.

The barrels. This is the big one for Gangplank mains. Your powder kegs are now beach balls or inflatable pool toys, cant remember which exactly but they read cleanly on the Rift. When they chain and pop, you get this splash of water VFX that feels satisfying. Not as dramatic as Dreadnova’s space explosions, but way more fun.

Q poke in lane shoots a water gun projectile. Kinda feels like it has a slightly different animation speed visually even though it doesnt mechanically. Played maybe 40 games with this skin last summer and the Q felt snappy. Could be wrong here but I think the water trail helps you track the projectile better against dark-themed Rift terrain.

His ult, Cannon Barrage, drops water balloons instead of cannonballs. The circle on the ground shifts to a pool-party themed zone. Honestly its one of the better ult overlays for Gangplank because the waves inside the zone are easy to see during a chaotic teamfight. When you’re calling down R on a dragon fight at 25 minutes and there’s eight champions stacked, clarity matters. Pool Party delivers there.

Recall animation has Gangplank grilling something on a barbecue. Classic Pool Party line energy. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but Matthew Mercer’s original Gangplank voice already has enough personality that it doesnt feel like a miss. The skin carries on visuals alone.

The Pool Party line and release context

Pool Party Gangplank dropped August 2, 2018. Deep into season 8. Bo ‘chenbowow’ Chen nailed the splash, the composition with Gangplank looking like he’s about to flip a burger while surrounded by chaos is peak Pool Party energy.

The Pool Party skinline is one of Riot’s longest running summer themes. Gangplank fits naturally next to Pool Party Lee Sin, Pool Party Fiora, Pool Party Zac. There’s a shared vibe across all of them: bright colors, water VFX, summer vacation aesthetic. I think Gangplank’s version is one of the better executed of the set because his kit translates so well to the theme. Barrels become pool toys. Ult becomes a water balloon bombardment. Q becomes a water gun. Everything maps cleanly.

6 chromas total. Obsidian goes dark and moody which is a weird pick for a beach skin but some people want that edgelord Pool Party energy I guess. Amethyst actually looks clean, the purple tones on the shorts and shirt pop against the Rift. Pearl is the sleeper pick for me, the white and teal combo reads crisp in-game. (Random aside: I use Pearl specifically because it looks like actual resort wear and not a costume.) The rest fill out the expected color wheel but those three stand out.

Shop has it. Permanent availability at 1350 RP, standard Epic pricing. Nothing locked behind vaults or Hextech crafting.

Worth the 1350 RP?

So is it worth it? For Gangplank mains, yeah. Real talk though, you’re picking between this, Dreadnova, and Gangplank the Betrayer as your main rotation skins. Pool Party occupies a specific mood. It’s the “I’m not taking this ranked game that seriously but I still want to one-shot the backline with a triple barrel” skin.

Spammed this in Diamond during one stretch last August, maybe 15 games over a weekend. The VFX never got old. The barrel pops specifically. You know what surprised me? The E particles on barrel placement have this subtle water ripple that I didnt notice until game six or seven. Small detail that shows Riot put in the work on this one.

If you only play Gangplank occasionally and want one skin, this probably isnt the pick. Captain Gangplank is free and iconic, Dreadnova has the sci-fi edge, the Betrayer has the lore weight. But if you already main Gangplank and want a fun alt for when you’re climbing through Diamond on a summer evening and want the game to feel lighter, Pool Party Gangplank earns its 1350 RP. Fair price for the package. Skip it if you need your Gangplank to feel menacing. Lock it in if you want barrel combos to feel like a beach party. Been daily driving this every summer since 2019 and I keep coming back to it when the weather gets warm outside.
