Captain Gangplank

First time I saw Captain Gangplank load in I thought someone was playing a different champion. Not gonna lie, the whole vibe shifts from pirate king to actual naval officer and it caught me off guard in champ select. This was back during the Bilgewater: Burning Tides event in 2015, and Riot basically gave Gangplank a whole identity crisis in the lore. The skin captures that pre-betrayal version of him, clean coat and all.

What actually changes on Captain Gangplank

So for a 975 RP Standard tier skin, Captain Gangplank punches way above its weight class. New model obviously, Gangplank trades the ragged pirate look for a proper captain’s uniform. Blue coat, trimmed hat, the whole naval commander aesthetic. He looks like he actually bathes, which is a first for this champion.

The VFX got a refresh too. Subtle but noticeable, especially on his Q and his barrels. Could be wrong here but I think the Powder Keg explosions read slightly cleaner in teamfights compared to base. Nothing dramatic like a Legendary overhaul but enough that you notice it after 10-15 games. Been running this in Diamond and the barrel chains feel visually tighter.

Here’s what really sets it apart though: new voice lines. At 975 RP. Thats rare. Matthew Mercer recorded additional VO for this skin specifically, and the lines lean into the captain fantasy hard. More commanding, less unhinged pirate. You get references to Bilgewater politics, his crew, the whole nautical hierarchy thing. For context most skins at this price point keep base voice lines, so getting fresh VO is genuinely unusual.

No new recall animation. Simple change – clean model, tweaked effects, new voice. But the package works.

The Bilgewater event and why this skin exists

Captain Gangplank released August 9, 2015 as part of the Bilgewater: Burning Tides event. Alex ‘alexplank’ Flores nailed the splash, capturing that moment where Gangplank still had his ship and his reputation intact. The splash has this warm golden lighting that sells the captain fantasy.

The Bilgewater: Burning Tides line was one of Riot’s better narrative events. Season 5 I think. They literally disabled Gangplank from ranked for a few days because he “died” in the lore. Wild times. (random aside: my ranked queue that week was chaos because every Gangplank main was suddenly picking Graves instead)

This skin represents the “before” Gangplank, the respected captain of the Dead Pool. If you played during that event you remember the buildup. Might be overthinking it but I feel like this skin hits different if you were there for the original event versus just buying it cold from the shop today.

Zero chromas on this one. Shop has it permanently at 975 RP, no vault rotation or loot-only nonsense.

Should you pick up Captain Gangplank?

Real verdict: this is one of the best value skins in the game for what you pay. 975 RP gets you a new model, updated VFX, and fresh voice lines from Matthew Mercer. Most Epic skins at 1350 dont offer that full a package. If you main Gangplank and you’re grinding ranked, this is a clean option that wont distract you with over-the-top particle effects during barrel combos in lane.

Played maybe 200 games with this one across two seasons. The model reads well on the Rift, the voice lines add personality without getting annoying after game 50, and the price is right. Last Tuesday around 2 AM I hit a five-barrel chain in a late-game teamfight and the VFX looked crisp even in the chaos.

Only real downside is if you want something flashier. Dreadnova or FPX Gangplank go harder on effects. But for a no-nonsense Gangplank skin that respects the champion’s lore? 975 RP well spent for mains. Skip it if you need chromas or fancy recall animations, but for the core gameplay experience Captain Gangplank delivers more than it should at this price point. S-tier Gangplank cosmetic for the money.
