Spooky Gangplank

First time I saw Spooky Gangplank loaded into my game I genuinely laughed. Not in a bad way. There’s something about turning this grizzled pirate into a Halloween specter that just works in the dumbest possible way. Been playing Gangplank on and off since season 3, and this skin keeps sneaking back into my rotation every October. Comfort pick.

What Spooky Gangplank actually changes

So this is a 520 RP Standard tier skin. Temper expectations. You’re not getting a full model overhaul or new voice lines here. Voice stays default. No new recall animation either. What you do get is a ghostly pirate reskin that turns Gangplank into this pale, spectral figure with tattered robes and a general “I died at sea and came back angry” vibe.

The texture work is solid for the price point. Gangplank’s coat goes from his usual rugged brown to this washed-out grey-blue that reads well on the Rift. His face has that undead pallor going on. Not gonna lie, it looks better in motion than in the splash. The splash is showing its age hard, but the in-game model holds up surprisingly well for something from 2010.

There’s some VFX touches which surprised me at this price. The barrel explosions and Q proc have a slightly different color tone. Nothing dramatic, you wont notice it unless you’re looking, but it’s there. His Parrrley still chunks the same in lane, the barrels still zone teamfights the same way. Playing this skin in a ranked game last Friday around midnight, my support pinged my skin like three times. Think they were confused.

No new animations on the ult either. Same cannonball rain. Same global pressure. Could be wrong here but I feel like the auto attack animation might be slightly different on the sword swing? Might be placebo. Either way it doesnt affect gameplay at all, which is what matters when you’re trying to hit barrel chains in a late-game teamfight.

The Trick-or-Treat line and some history

Spooky Gangplank dropped March 16, 2010. Early League days. The Trick-or-Treat skinline wasn’t even really a formal thing back then, Riot was just making Halloween-themed skins and slapping them out. The Trick-or-Treat line has grown since, but Spooky Gangplank is one of the OGs in that catalog.

No artist credit on record for the splash. Given the era thats not surprising. A lot of those early splashes were done by the internal team before Riot started commissioning external studios. (Random aside: I kind of miss the jank of old League splash art, it had character even when it was rough.)

Zero chromas on this one. At 520 RP that tracks. Riot doesn’t usually invest chroma sets into skins at this price point. Shop has it permanently, so no need to wait for a vault rotation or anything. Just grab it whenever.

Should you pick up Spooky Gangplank?

Real verdict: this is a budget Gangplank skin that does exactly what it promises. Ghost pirate. Halloween flavor. 520 RP is basically nothing, less than a coffee. If you main Gangplank and want variety in your skin rotation without dropping 1820 on Dreadnova, Spooky Gangplank earns its spot.

Been spamming this in Diamond during October for like three seasons now and honestly it’s become a ritual. Lock it in for the vibes, barrel combo their ADC into the shadow realm, type “spooked” in all chat. Simple pleasures. Best budget Gangplank skin if you’re not trying to flex. The Trick-or-Treat fantasy is there, the price is right, and Gangplank mains who’ve been climbing with him know that skin doesn’t win games anyway. Your barrel timing does.

Maybe just my experience but I feel like I see more Captain and Dreadnova Gangplank in my games than Spooky. Seen maybe two Spooky Gangplanks all season besides mine. That’s part of the appeal honestly. Rare enough to feel personal without being Legacy vault locked. Worth 520 RP if you main Gangplank, skip it if you’re just passing through the champion.
