First time I saw Toy Soldier Gangplank load in, I thought someone was trolling my ranked game. A nutcracker version of the pirate king standing in bot lane with a tiny musket. Took me a second to realize this was an actual skin and not some custom mod. Been playing Gangplank on and off since season 2 and this one always catches me off guard when it shows up in champ select.
The nutcracker treatment on the Rift
So the whole concept here is Gangplank as a wooden toy soldier, like those nutcracker figures you see around Christmas. His model gets completely reworked into this stiff, blocky figure with painted-on features and a tall red hat. The color palette is heavy on reds, blues, and golds. Classic holiday vibes.
Not gonna lie, the VFX changes surprised me for a 975 RP skin from 2011. His Parrrley (Q) fires with a different muzzle flash that fits the toy musket aesthetic, and the barrels have this slightly cartoonish pop to them. Nothing dramatic but noticeable if you’re paying attention. Voice lines stay base, which makes sense for a Standard tier skin from that era. No new recall animation either, this was back when recalls were just recalls.
The walk animation is where it gets interesting. Gangplank moves with this rigid toy soldier march that honestly messes with my cs timing for the first few minutes every time I lock it in. Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack animation feels slightly different too, something about the musket swing. Played maybe 15 games with it last December and the stiff movement grew on me. Kinda feels like you’re piloting a wind-up toy through the lane.
(Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play with me when I use this skin because he says the model distracts him in teamfights. Dramatic.)
Toy Box line and the holiday legacy
Toy Soldier Gangplank dropped December 14, 2011. Deep into season 1 territory. Part of the Toy Box skinline, which is one of Riot’s smaller thematic sets. The Toy Box concept works better than it should for Gangplank specifically. A pirate turned into a nutcracker soldier is the kind of weird creative choice that Riot used to make more often.
This sits in the Legacy vault now, so you cant just grab it whenever. It typically comes back around the winter holidays if Riot feels generous with the vault rotation. No chromas exist for this one, which I think is fine. The red and blue toy soldier palette does its job without needing alternatives.
At 975 RP when it is available, thats fair pricing for what you get. Standard tier skin with model changes and some VFX work. Back in 2011 this was considered a solid release. By today’s standards its obviously not competing with something like Dreadnova or the FPX skin, but it has charm that newer skins dont even attempt.
Should you hunt this one down?
Real verdict: Toy Soldier Gangplank is a collector’s piece. If you main Gangplank and want something nobody else runs in your Diamond games, this is it. Seen maybe two of these in all of season 14. The novelty factor alone makes it worth grabbing when the vault opens, probably around November or December if the pattern holds.
Skip it if you only play Gangplank occasionally. The 975 RP is better spent on Captain Gangplank for the lore fantasy or saving up for one of his pricier options. But for one-tricks who already own everything else? Lock it in for the holidays. Best meme skin in his catalog, and the rigid march animation in lane genuinely makes me smile even after all these years. Not the best Gangplank skin full stop, but the one with the most personality per RP spent.
Real talk though, the fact that its Legacy makes it feel more special than it probably deserves. Scarcity does that. I keep it in rotation every December out of tradition at this point, right next to Snow Day Bard and Santa Gragas. Seasonal skins hit different when you only pull them out once a year.
