Sailor Gangplank

First time I saw Sailor Gangplank loading in, I thought someone was trolling. A pirate dressed as a sailor. Thats the joke, and honestly it lands harder than it should. Been playing Gangplank on and off since season 3, and this skin still gets reactions in the loading screen. Not flashy reactions. More like “wait, what skin is that” reactions from people who forgot it existed.

What Sailor Gangplank actually looks like in game

So the concept is simple: Gangplank ditched the pirate getup for a proper navy sailor uniform. White cap, blue outfit, the whole deal. It’s a Day Job skin, same line as stuff like Grocer Nunu or whatever Riot was cooking back in 2011. The idea that these champions have regular jobs on the side. For Gangplank specifically, a sailor uniform is funny because he’s already on a ship. He just went legit.

The model swap is clean for a 750 RP Standard skin. You get the sailor hat sitting on his head, a tidier outfit compared to his usual ragged look, and the overall silhouette reads differently enough in lane. Could be wrong here but I think the barrel skin also gets a subtle touch. The VFX have minor updates which surprised me for a skin this old and this cheap. Nothing dramatic, no new particles on his Q or anything like that. Voice lines stay base, no new recall animation either.

Played maybe 40 games with this skin last season around November, mostly in Diamond ranked. The auto attack animations feel identical to base Gangplank which is what you want. Some older skins mess with the feel of cs-ing and barrel combos but Sailor Gangplank keeps it tight. Barrel timing, Q poke in lane, everything plays the same. Important for a champion where one barrel chain in a late-game teamfight decides the whole thing.

The Day Job line and release history

Sailor Gangplank dropped January 10, 2011. Early League days. Season 1 territory. The Day Job skinline was Riot’s humor phase where they put champions in mundane occupations. Kinda feels like Riot wouldn’t make these anymore, the tone has shifted way too far toward epic fantasy and anime. Which makes these legacy skins feel more special in a weird way.

This one sits in the vault. Legacy catalog, so you cant just walk into the shop and buy it. You either catch it during a vault opening event or roll it from Hextech crafting. At 750 RP when it does come around, the price is fair. No chromas available, which makes sense given the era and price point. (Random aside: I kind of wish Riot would do a chroma pass on these old legacy skins but that’ll never happen.)

Should you pick up Sailor Gangplank?

Real verdict: this is a collector skin. Pure and simple. If you main Gangplank and you’re climbing through ranked, you probably want Captain Gangplank or Dreadnova for the premium feel. Those skins have the VFX and audio that match the RP investment. But if you’re a Gangplank one-trick who wants every skin in the collection, Sailor Gangplank is a must-have. The humor factor alone carries it.

750 RP feels fair for what you get. Not gonna lie, I’ve seen maybe two other people use this skin in my games all season. That rarity factor is real. Last Tuesday in a ranked game my support pinged my skin three times in fountain like they’d never seen it before. That kind of reaction is worth more than new particles.

Skip it if you only want one Gangplank skin. Pick it up if you appreciate the old-school Riot humor and want something nobody else is running on the Rift. Best skin for confusing your lane opponent into thinking you’re a casual player before you one-part barrel combo their backline at dragon. The sailor hat stays on during teamfights.
