First time I saw Black Belt Udyr in champ select I thought someone was trolling. Guy locks in Udyr with what looks like a karate gi and I’m sitting there in Diamond lobby wondering if we lost at draft. Turns out the skin actually has a certain charm to it once you see it on the Rift. Simple stuff but it works.
What Black Belt Udyr actually changes
Gonna be real upfront: this is a texture swap. No new VFX, no new animations, voice lines stay base. You’re getting Udyr in a martial arts outfit and thats about it. The gi is white with a black belt tied around the waist, which I guess is the whole point of the name. His stance forms keep the same particles as default Udyr so your Q Tiger, W Turtle, E Bear, R Phoenix all look identical ability-wise.
Not sure if it’s just me but the model reads cleaner than base Udyr in certain lighting. The white fabric pops against darker map areas, especially in the jungle where you’re spending 90% of your time anyway. Could be wrong here but I think the contrast actually helps with visual clarity during teamfights. When you’re diving the backline as Bear stance, at least your team can see you.
One thing I noticed after maybe 15 games with this skin last season: the recall is default. No custom animation. You press B and Udyr just stands there doing his base recall. For 520 RP in 2010 nobody expected more, but coming back to it in 2026 it feels bare. Standard voice, no new lines from Sean Rohani’s original VO.
The Day Job line and release context
Black Belt Udyr dropped July 18, 2010. Season 1 era. Wild times. The skin belongs to Riot’s Day Job skinline, which is one of those early thematic concepts where champions just get regular jobs or hobbies. Udyr’s day job is apparently doing martial arts, which honestly tracks for a guy who channels animal spirits through his fists.
Silvia Meiliani and Caravan Studio handled the splash art. Clean work for the era. The splash shows Udyr mid-stance in his gi looking like he’s about to roundhouse kick someone in bot lane specifically. (Random aside: I used this splash as a Discord avatar for like three months back in season 10 just to confuse people.)
No chromas available for this one. Zero. Given how old the skin is and how basic the model changes are, I doubt Riot circles back to add any. The Day Job line isnt exactly their priority these days.
Should you pick up Black Belt Udyr?
Real verdict: 520 RP is pocket change and Black Belt Udyr delivers exactly what you’d expect at that price point. Nothing more. Been running this in normals when I want something different from Dragon Oracle or Inkshadow but dont want to think too hard about it. It’s a comfort pick.
Shop has it permanently so no rush. If you’re an Udyr one-trick climbing through ranked and you want every skin in the collection, grab it. If you’re looking for actual gameplay feel changes or new VFX on your jungle clear, skip this and save for something with more substance. Overpriced? No. 520 RP feels fair for what you get. But “fair” and “exciting” are two different things.
Played against an Udyr wearing this skin last Tuesday around 2 AM in a Diamond game. He ganked my lane pre-6 in Bear stance and I barely noticed the skin difference from default until the death recap screen. That kind of tells you everything. Functional, cheap, forgettable. Honestly for Udyr mains who have been spamming him since the rework, this one’s a nostalgia piece more than anything else.
