Inkshadow Udyr

First game I played with Inkshadow Udyr was maybe 2 AM on release night, season 13. Locked it in for a ranked jungle game, loaded up, and the splash alone had me sold before I even cleared raptors. Not sure if it’s just me but something about the ink-wash aesthetic on a brawler like Udyr just works in a way I wasnt expecting. The whole skin feels like somebody dropped a traditional East Asian painting into the Rift and let it fight.

How the ink changes Udyr’s stances

So the reworked Udyr already has a lot going on visually with four stance swaps, and Inkshadow leans into that hard. Every stance shift carries new VFX that look like ink splashing across the ground. Wildhawk stance Q procs leave these dark brushstroke trails on auto attacks. Clean effect. Iron Boar W shield gets this swirling calligraphy pattern around Udyr that reads well in teamfights without being too noisy.

Blazing Ram E is where things get interesting. The charge animation has ink particles trailing behind you, and when you stun someone the impact feels heavier than base. Wingborne Storm R sends out these ink-cloud spirits that circle Udyr during jungle clear. Honestly the R is what carries the skin for me. Been running this in Diamond for months and the R aura just looks premium compared to default.

The recall animation is new too. Udyr does this meditative pose with ink dragons materializing around him. Short, clean, no wasted frames. Base voice lines though, no VO refresh on this one. Standard for an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP.

The Inkshadow line and release context

Inkshadow dropped May 3, 2023. Mid-season 13. The line came with a whole batch: Yasuo, Kai’Sa, Yone, Volibear, and Udyr. Kinda feels like Riot built the skinline around champions that could sell the ink-brush fantasy through movement and particles rather than just model changes.

Augusto Quirino and West Studio handled the artwork. They captured the vibe perfectly. The splash has Udyr mid-transformation with ink spirits pouring out of his body, mountain landscape behind him. (Random aside: this splash is genuinely one of the better ones in Udyr’s catalog, which I know is a low bar considering Primal Udyr exists.)

The Inkshadow thematic sits somewhere between Spirit Blossom and Shan Hai Scrolls. More aggressive than Spirit Blossom, less ornate than Shan Hai. Udyr fits it naturally because the stance-swapping monk identity maps onto the wandering martial artist archetype without forcing it.

Chromas and which ones hit

5 chromas total. Obsidian is the standout for me. Goes full dark ink on everything, the stance VFX read like shadow puppets against the Rift. Been daily driving Obsidian specifically since that ranked game where my Kayn inted bot lane and I had to 1v9 from jungle. The dark palette just feels right for those solo carry games.

Inked chroma deserves a mention too. The teal-green accent on white gives it this jade scroll look that’s distinct from every other option. Sapphire is fine but reads too close to base Spirit Guard coloring for my taste. Ruby and Rose Quartz exist. They’re there. Shop has it permanently so no rush on picking up the bundle.

Should you buy Inkshadow Udyr?

Real verdict: 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX work across all four stances is solid, the recall is good, and the ink theme gives Udyr an identity that none of his other skins touch. Dragon Oracle is the only real competitor in his catalog and Inkshadow edges it out on particle quality.

Could be wrong here but I think this is the best Epic skin Udyr has. Spirit Guard is technically Ultimate tier but it’s also from season 3 and showing its age. If you main Udyr or you’re picking him up for jungle this season, Inkshadow is the lock-in. Played maybe 200 games with it across two seasons and I keep coming back. The stance VFX alone justify the price for anyone who’s spamming Udyr in comp. Skip it if you only play him once a month in ARAM, but for mains? Top pick for Udyr mains, no question.
