Haunted Maokai

First time I saw Haunted Maokai load in was a late October ranked game, maybe season 3. My support pinged it and typed “nice skin” in chat. Been a fan since. Not sure if it’s just me but there’s something about the Halloween skins that Riot just nails consistently, and Maokai fits the creepy tree fantasy so naturally it almost feels like cheating.

The spooky VFX and what actually changes

For a 975 RP Standard tier skin, Haunted Maokai punches above its weight class. The model turns Maokai into a proper horror-movie tree. Gnarled bark, ghostly wisps hanging off his branches, and those eyes. The eyes glow this sickly green that reads well on the Rift even in teamfights.

VFX got a real refresh here. His Q saplings come out looking like little ghost creatures, which honestly changes the feel of laning with him entirely. Played maybe 40 games of Maokai support last season and the Haunted saplings in bushes just hit different. Your ADC sees them and knows something spooky is about to proc. The W root animation carries that spectral green theme through, and his ult spreading across the lane looks like a haunted forest floor creeping toward the backline.

Voice lines stay base. No new VO, which is expected at this price point. Jay Preston’s original Maokai voice works fine though. Kinda feels like the base voice actually fits the haunted vibe better than you’d expect. No new recall animation either, standard stuff for 2012 skins.

Trick-or-Treat origins and the 2012 drop

Haunted Maokai released October 26, 2012. Right before Halloween, obviously. Part of the Trick-or-Treat skinline, which Riot rolls out every October. The Trick-or-Treat line has some bangers across the roster and Maokai fits the theme more naturally than most champions in the set.

Volta Studio handled the artwork. They captured this old-school horror poster energy in the splash. Maokai looming out of fog with those green eyes, saplings crawling around his roots. (Random aside: I used the splash as my Discord avatar for like two months straight one Halloween.) Legacy vault skin, so you cant just grab it whenever. Sits in the vault until Riot decides to crack it open, usually around Harrowing events or special shop rotations.

Should you pick up Haunted Maokai?

Real verdict: if you play Maokai in any role and you like the spooky aesthetic, this is worth grabbing when it rotates back. 975 RP is fair for what you get. The VFX changes on saplings alone make laning and jungle clear feel fresh. Been running this skin on and off since season 4 I think, and it still holds up against newer Maokai options.

Could be wrong here but I think this edges out most of his cheaper skins. The Trick-or-Treat theme gives Maokai something his base fantasy already leans into. Compare it to Festive Maokai or Totemic and theres a clear gap in quality. For mains who want something with actual visual impact pre-6 and in late-game teamfights, Haunted Maokai delivers. Best bet is to watch for Legacy vault openings around October. Lock it in when you see it. Simple change – huge impact on how the champion feels in your hands.
