Worldbreaker Maokai

First game I played with Worldbreaker Maokai was around 1 AM on a Wednesday, queued up for ranked, locked in Maokai support into a Leona lane. Immediately noticed how different the model felt compared to base. The whole ancient god aesthetic hits hard on a champion who already looks like a walking ruin. Not gonna lie, I wasnt expecting much from another 1350 RP Epic skin for a tank, but this one surprised me.

The Worldbreaker treatment on Maokai

Maokai gets a full stone deity redesign here. Think Aztec or Mayan temple guardian brought to life. His bark texture is replaced with carved stone, and there’s gold trim running through the cracks of his body. The saplings from E look like tiny stone idols now, which is a detail I appreciate more than I should. Threw one into a bush during a teamfight near dragon pit last season and watched their Jinx walk right into it. The little things.

Q slam has updated VFX with earthy golden particles spreading outward. Feels heavier than base, which matters when you’re peeling for your ADC. W root animation gets the stone treatment too, Maokai wrapping targets in what looks like ancient vines made of rock. Could be wrong here but I think the R wave reads slightly better in this skin than default. The wall of roots has this golden glow that makes it easier for your team to follow up on engages.

Recall animation is new. Maokai channels some kind of ritual, very on-theme for the Worldbreaker line. Voice lines stay base, no VO refresh, which is standard for this price point. The model changes carry the skin though. Playing this skin, the auto attack animations feel clean in lane when you’re csing or trading.

Worldbreaker Maokai dropped April 9, 2020. Mid-season 10. Xuning Cui and Kudos Productions handled the artwork, and they captured the ancient destroyer vibe perfectly.

The Worldbreaker skinline is one of those underrated Riot themes. It pulls from Mesoamerican mythology, and Maokai fits naturally into it. He’s already a nature spirit, so making him a stone god of destruction isnt a huge leap. Worldbreaker Trundle, Nasus, Hecarim, Nautilus, Malzahar all share the line. Maokai holds his own in that group. (Random aside: the Worldbreaker splash arts would make a sick wallpaper collage if someone stitched them together.)

7 chromas available for this one. Tanzanite is my go-to, the deep purple against the gold trim looks royal. Pearl gives a cleaner, lighter stone feel that reads well on the Rift. Ruby exists for the red enjoyers but honestly it clashes a bit with the temple guardian fantasy. Been running Tanzanite in Diamond for maybe 30 games and it just fits.

Worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: Worldbreaker Maokai is a solid Epic skin. New VFX on abilities, new recall, strong model redesign. For 1350 RP this is fair pricing. Maokai doesn’t have a massive skin catalog, so the competition is limited. Meowkai is the meme pick, Astronaut is the other modern option, and Victorious is locked behind ranked rewards.

Kinda feels like this skin works best for Maokai mains who want something with weight to it. The stone aesthetic gives Maokai a presence in teamfights that base just doesn’t match. Been maining Maokai with this in support and top lane, and the skin holds up in both roles. Not sure if it’s just me but the saplings feel more satisfying to throw when they look like angry stone totems.

Shop has it. 1350 RP well spent for mains. If you play Maokai even semi-regularly in ranked, this is top pick for the champion. Skip it if you’re only playing him when autofilled, but for anyone who actually locks in the tree on purpose, Worldbreaker earns its spot. Season 12 I think I played like 23 games in a row one weekend with this skin and never got tired of the look. S-tier Maokai cosmetic.
