Goalkeeper Maokai

First time I saw this skin in a loading screen I thought someone was trolling. A giant tree in a goalkeeper jersey diving for saves. Honestly not gonna lie, it grew on me faster than I expected. There’s something about Maokai in full soccer gear that just works in the most ridiculous way possible.

What the soccer tree actually looks like

Goalkeeper Maokai throws Maokai into full kit. Goalkeeper gloves, shorts, cleats, the whole deal. The color scheme is this bright green and yellow combo that reads clean on the Rift. His model changes are solid for a 750 RP Standard tier skin. Not a full overhaul but enough that you notice it immediately in lane.

The VFX tweaks are the real surprise here. Saplings get a slight soccer ball treatment which I didnt expect at this price point. His Q slam and W root still feel like base Maokai ability-wise but the visual flavor ties into the soccer theme. Been running this in Diamond norms last Thursday and my support pinged the sapling like three times thinking it was a ward. Classic.

Voice lines stay base. Jay Preston’s Maokai VO works fine though. The deep tree voice contrasting with the goofy soccer outfit is half the charm. No new recall animation either, so you’re getting the standard Maokai recall. For 750 RP thats expected.

The Soccer Cup line and when this dropped

Released June 18, 2014. Right around the World Cup that year, obviously. Riot went all in on the Soccer Cup skinline and Goalkeeper Maokai was part of that batch. The timing was perfect. Season 4 I think, back when Maokai was still seeing pro play as a toplaner before they shifted him more toward support and jungle roles.

Soccer Cup as a skinline is one of those event-tied collections that only comes back during major tournaments. Goalkeeper Maokai sits in the Legacy vault now, so you cant just grab it whenever. Vault rotation skin, shows up maybe once a year if you’re lucky. No chromas available for this one.

(Random aside: I used this skin exclusively during Worlds 2022 watch parties with friends, felt thematically appropriate even though its soccer not league esports. Nobody questioned it.)

Worth the 750 RP from the vault?

Real verdict: if you play Maokai support or jungle and want something lighthearted, this is a solid pickup when it rotates back. 750 RP feels fair for what you get. The model changes carry the skin, the VFX additions are a bonus at this price, and the comedy factor in champ select when you lock in a tree goalkeeper is worth something.

Could be wrong here but I think this is one of those skins that ages well specifically because its silly. Not every Maokai skin needs to be dark and brooding. Played maybe 40 games with this around 2 AM on weekends when the ranked grind gets stale and you just want to throw saplings at people while looking like you’re about to make a penalty save.

Maokai mains who want a serious skin should look at Astronaut or Worldbreaker. But if you want the skin that gets a reaction in bot lane every single game, Goalkeeper Maokai delivers. Skip it if you only care about flashy VFX. Grab it if you appreciate Riot’s goofier side. The Soccer Cup collection doesnt miss when it comes to pure fun factor, and Maokai fits the goalkeeper role better than any other champ could. Big tree. Big gloves. Simple change – huge impact on the vibe.
