Bilgewater Swain

First time I saw Bilgewater Swain in a loading screen I thought someone was running a custom skin. Pirate Swain just hits different than what you’d expect from a Noxian general. Been running this one on and off since maybe season 4 or 5, dont remember exactly, and it still holds up for what it is. Not flashy. Not trying to be. Just a solid reskin that turns the Grand General into something out of a port tavern.

What Bilgewater Swain actually looks like in game

The model swap is the main attraction here. Swain trades his Noxian military getup for a full pirate captain outfit. Tricorn hat, long coat, the whole deal. His cane gets a nautical redesign too. Kinda feels like Riot looked at Gangplank one day and said “what if the bird guy went to Bilgewater for a weekend.”

The VFX got a slight touch compared to base. Nothing dramatic for a 520 RP Standard skin, but you notice the color shifts on his Q and R if you’re paying attention. His ult form still has the demon bird transformation, just with the pirate aesthetic layered on. Played maybe 30 games with this last month in Diamond and the R transformation in teamfights still looks clean enough. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is expected at this price point.

No new recall animation either. You press B, Swain does Swain things. Simple change – huge impact on the visual identity though. The auto attack animations read well against the Rift backdrop, and the model doesn’t blend into darker map areas the way some older skins do.

The Bilgewater line and where this skin fits

Released October 5, 2010. That’s pre-rework Swain we’re talking about. The skin survived the 2018 rework and came out looking better for it honestly. Zeen Chin handled the artwork, and the splash captures this weathered pirate commander vibe that I think works better than the in-game model deserves at this price tier.

Part of the Bilgewater: Burning Tides skinline. Not sure if it’s just me but I always felt like Swain was an odd pick for a Bilgewater skin. The champion’s whole identity is Noxian politics and demon pacts. Throwing him on a ship feels like putting Azir in a snowsuit. But somehow it works? (random aside: the splash has been my Discord avatar for like two years and nobody has ever identified it as Swain on first guess)

Zero chromas on this one. Shop has it for 520 RP permanently. For a skin thats been around since 2010, the lack of chromas isn’t surprising. Riot tends to reserve chroma batches for 1350 RP skins and above. Real talk though, even one dark navy chroma would’ve pushed this skin into must-buy territory for Swain mains.

Should you buy Bilgewater Swain?

Straight talk: 520 RP feels fair for what you get. You’re not getting Legendary treatment here. No new voice lines, no custom recall, no fancy particle overhaul. What you get is a strong model swap that completely changes Swain’s silhouette and vibe. Last Tuesday around 2 AM I locked in Swain support with this skin and my ADC typed “pirate swain is goated” in champ select. That’s the energy this skin carries.

If you main Swain and want variety without dropping 1820 on Dragon Master, this is your budget pick. Overpriced compared to newer 520 skins? Maybe. But for an old guard Standard skin that survived a full VGU, Bilgewater Swain earned its spot in the rotation. Skip it if you already own Tyrant or Dragon Master. Worth 520 RP if you main Swain and want something different for those bot lane games where you just want to peel and poke without looking like every other Swain in the comp.
