Heartache Amumu

Played this skin maybe 30 games the week it dropped and honestly not gonna lie, it caught me off guard. Amumu getting a Valentine’s Day skin sounds like the most obvious pitch Riot could greenlight. The sad mummy who just wants a hug, heartbroken, lonely. Its almost too on the nose. But the execution landed way harder than I expected. Locked it in during a late-night ranked session last February and the VFX alone sold me before the first teamfight.

What Heartache Amumu actually changes on the Rift

The model rework gives Amumu this gothic heartbreak aesthetic. Dark purples and deep reds, torn fabric, cracked heart motifs everywhere. His bandages look like they’re woven from old love letters or something. Dramatic stuff.

VFX is where the 1350 RP earns its keep. His Q pulls out this chain of broken hearts that shatter on impact. Been hitting bandage tosses in Diamond and the visual read is clean, you see the projectile clearly even in messy teamfights. W aura pulses with these falling rose petals that wilt as they hit the ground. Kinda feels like Riot’s VFX team had a rough breakup and channeled it all here.

E is satisfying. The tantrum burst sends out a shockwave of shattered heart fragments. Good visual feedback when you proc it in the middle of a clumped enemy comp. R is the highlight though. Curse of the Sad Mummy drops this massive cracked heart cage around everyone caught in it. The stun effect has these thorny vines wrapping targets. Could be wrong here but I think the ult circle is slightly easier to read than base, which matters when you’re trying to land a 4-man engage off a flash play.

Recall animation is solid. Amumu sits down with a little valentine card, reads it, tears it up. Short and sweet. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the skin filter on his voice wasnt changed either so everything sounds normal.

The Heartthrobs and Heartaches line and who made it

Heartache Amumu released February 10, 2023. Right before Valentine’s Day, obviously. Season 13 was just getting started.

Ina Wong and West Studio handled the artwork. The splash captures the vibe perfectly. Amumu standing alone in what looks like an abandoned ballroom, rose petals scattered everywhere, single tear rolling down. (Random aside: this splash genuinely makes me feel bad for a fictional yordle mummy and I dont know what that says about me.)

The Heartthrobs and Heartaches skinline pairs Heartache Amumu with Heartthrob Caitlyn from the same drop. Caitlyn got the confident heartbreaker fantasy, Amumu got the other side of that coin. The duality works. Riot leaned into the theme hard and it paid off for both skins.

8 chromas available for Heartache Amumu. Obsidian is my pick, the all-black gothic look just fits the heartbreak theme better than base does honestly. Amethyst pushes the purple way harder and reads like a proper dark magic vibe. Pearl goes the opposite direction, almost angelic, which is a weird contrast but somehow works on the little guy. Shop has it permanently so no vault anxiety.

Is Heartache Amumu worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is a top-tier Epic skin for Amumu. Maybe not the flashiest champion to invest in cosmetically since he’s not exactly a highlight-reel pick, but if you play Amumu in ranked at all this skin feels good. The VFX clarity on Q and R specifically makes a difference when you’re looking for engage angles in bot lane or around dragon pit.

Been running this as my main Amumu skin since it came out. Took it into a clash tournament last spring and got compliments from my ADC who didnt even know Amumu had skins beyond Surprise Party. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New particles on every ability, clean recall, strong splash. Not gonna compete with Surprise Party for the meme factor but as a serious skin for Amumu mains grinding ranked, this is the one. Skip it if you only pull Amumu out in ARAM, but for anyone who actually locks him in as a jungle or support pick regularly, Heartache Amumu delivers. Best Amumu skin if you want something that isnt a joke skin full stop.
