First time I saw Galaxy Slayer Zed load into my game, season 9 ranked, I actually thought it was a different champion for half a second. The silhouette is that different. Been maining Zed on and off since season 5, and this skin changed how I feel about locking him in. Not even exaggerating. The cosmic blade energy, the purple-black color palette, the way his shadows look like actual rifts in space. Riot went somewhere completely different with this one and it paid off.
What Galaxy Slayer Zed actually brings to the table
This is a full Legendary at 1820 RP, so you’re getting the complete package. New model, new VFX on every ability, new voice lines performed by Donny Lucas, new recall animation. Q shurikens leave these trailing cosmic particles that feel sharper than base. Might be overthinking it but I swear the Q animation reads faster visually even though the hitbox is identical. The energy blades have this neon purple edge that pops hard against the Rift.
W is where it gets interesting. Your shadow doesnt just appear, it phases in through what looks like a dimensional tear. Clean effect. Makes your W placement feel more intentional somehow, like you’re ripping a hole in space to put your shadow there. In teamfights where you’re looking to dive the backline, the visual clarity on your shadow swap is actually better than base Zed.
E slash has the cosmic trail effect. Nothing groundbreaking but it reads well. The real star is R. Death Mark on Galaxy Slayer Zed is one of the best ult animations in the game. Full stop. The targeting indicator goes cosmic, you phase through dimensions, and the pop on the mark detonation has this satisfying purple explosion. Played maybe 150 games with this skin last season and the R never got old. (Random aside: the death mark pop sound is genuinely my favorite audio cue in the entire game.)
Recall animation has Zed slicing through some kind of space portal. Short, clean, fits the theme. Voice lines are completely redone with this alien warrior vibe. Zed sounds like he’s been traveling between galaxies hunting targets. Some of the lines reference the Odyssey universe directly which is a nice touch if you care about the lore side.
The Odyssey line and where Galaxy Slayer fits
Galaxy Slayer Zed dropped April 18, 2019. Part of the Odyssey skinline, which is one of Riot’s more ambitious thematic universes. Esben Lash Rasmussen nailed the splash, the composition with the dual blades against that nebula background captures the skin’s whole identity in one image.
The Odyssey line includes some heavy hitters. Kayn, Jinx, Sona all got Odyssey skins. Zed fits naturally as the assassin archetype in the space opera setting. Kinda feels like Riot designed the whole Odyssey villain faction around what Zed would look like in space and then built outward from there.
7 chromas available if you want to mix it up. Merc is my pick, the black and crimson color scheme turns Galaxy Slayer into something that looks straight out of a Sith lord fantasy. Sapphire shifts the palette to deep blue which reads cleanly in lane. Pearl exists if you want the lighter aesthetic but honestly its not my favorite on this particular skin. The Mythic chroma adds a pink-blue split that some people love. I’ve seen maybe 4 of those in my Diamond games all season, pretty rare.
Still in the shop. Permanent availability so no vault anxiety. You can grab it whenever.
How Galaxy Slayer compares to other Zed skins
Zed has a stacked skin catalog. PROJECT Zed was the go-to for years. Shockblade is clean for a cheaper option. Death Sworn has its fans. But Galaxy Slayer Zed sits at the top for me and I think most Zed mains would agree.
Not sure if it’s just me but the ability VFX on Galaxy Slayer feel more readable than PROJECT. PROJECT has that tech overlay that can get visually noisy in a chaotic teamfight. Galaxy Slayer’s cosmic effects are distinct enough that you always know where your shadow is and where your shurikens went. That matters when you’re trying to hit a W-E-Q combo on a priority target pre-6 and you need to track everything precisely.
Been running this exclusively in ranked for two months this split. Around 2 AM last Wednesday I hit a triple kill in dragon pit that looked absolutely cinematic with the Galaxy Slayer VFX. The R pop on their ADC, shadow swap to their Lux, Q snipe on their Karma trying to peel. Stuff like that is why you pay 1820 RP. The skin makes highlight plays look better.
Real talk though, if you’re a Zed one-trick on a budget, Shockblade at 975 RP gives you solid value. But if you’re spending on one premium Zed skin, Galaxy Slayer is the answer. Empyrean Zed exists too and it’s decent, but Galaxy Slayer’s color palette and VFX cohesion are tighter.
Should you buy Galaxy Slayer Zed?
Verdict time. 1820 RP well spent for mains. This is not one of those Legendaries where you wonder what the extra money went toward. New VO, new VFX on every ability, new animations, 7 chromas for variety. The Odyssey theme works perfectly for Zed’s kit fantasy. Slicing through space, hunting across galaxies, the whole package lands.
Skip this if you barely play Zed. Obvious advice but 1820 RP on a champion you touch twice a month is a waste. For anyone who has Zed in their ranked rotation, who plays him mid or farms jungle with him, this is the skin. Could be wrong here but I think Galaxy Slayer Zed is arguably the best Zed skin even with all the options that came after it. The cosmic assassin identity is too strong. S-tier Zed cosmetic. Lock it in.
